Project status

- YES
- Is your project completed?
- YES
Activities and lessons learned
editActivities
edit- Before the contest (i.e. before September)
- Renewal of web domains for the contest.
- Definition of the jury members.
- Setting up a Facebook ads campaign as a complementary advertisement method for the contest. A campaign with several different ads was created.
- Initial update of the contest website, Facebook page and Twitter account.
- During the contest (i.e. during September)
- Grant processing, including the creation of a shared bank account for the Wikimedistas de Colombia user group.
- Running and following up the Facebook ads campaign.
- Contest prizes were bought in Amazon, and imported to Colombia by using a courier service (4-72).
- Continuous updates of the contest website, Facebook page and Twitter account.
- Answering of questions from the participants (asked mainly via e-mail and website comments).
- After the contest (i.e. after September)
- A web tool was re-developed for the juries, so they could use it to check the participating photos efficiently.
- Juries decided the contest winners. During this stage, they had continuous guidance from the organization.
- Announcement of the winners in the contest website, Facebook page and Twitter account.
- Shipping the prices to the winners.
- The third place winner didn't claim his prize in time. During one month, we published several messages trying to contact him. After this month, the prize was re-assigned and shipped to the fourth place.
Lessons learned
edit- What worked well?
- For this year's contest, we decided to allow people to freely photograph elements that could be cataloged as "monuments", even if they were not officially designed as them. This provided a way more diverse and active participation than last year.
- What didn't work?
- Some people had trouble using the upload tools provided by Commons.
- The grant was asked too late. We wanted to announce the contest prizes since the beginning of the contest, but the bank account creation took too much time and the delay caused trouble with this.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- We would ask for the grant with more time.
- We are not sure about what to conclude about the Facebook ads. On one side, most of the traffic of the contest came from Wikipedia (thanks to the "site notice" message). On the other side, we knew about people who knew about the contest thanks to the Facebook ads. If we had to pick one choice, we would not spend money on extra advertising again.
Learning patterns
edit- Six-account limit. used during a small workshop in a local university. An admin created the required accounts. Also applied it for accounts with names filtered by the Mediawiki filter.
- Photographing your local buildings.
- Materials in their own language.
Outcomes and impact
editOutcomes
edit- Provide the original project goal here.
The goal of the project is to bring colombian people closer to the Wikimedia projects by asking them to produce photos that illustrate monuments all around Colombia and put those photos in Wikimedia Commons under a free license.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
- We believe the goal was achieved, as about 120 people interacted with a Wikimedia project for the first time, and about 30 people did it again after being inactive (see Global Metrics section). However, we are also aware that participation was not as high as we wanted it to be.
Progress towards targets and goals
editProject metrics
Project metrics | Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Beat our current best of 220 participants and 6126 uploaded photos (2012 competition). | 156 participants and 2794 uploaded photos. | The targets were not reached. We did beat last year's stats, though: 2013 competition had 82 participants and 1251 uploaded photos. | |
Picture 35 or more Colombian towns. | 149 (possibly more*) pictured towns. | The target was reached successfully. *: almost 194 photos weren't correctly labeled by their uploaders, so their corresponding town is unknown; because of that, probably more than 149 towns were actually pictured during the contest. |
Global Metrics
editWe are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.
- Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
- Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."
For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.
Metric | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
1. # of active editors involved | between 10 and 12 | 4 organizers + 8 participants who did 5 or more edits in the 60 days before the contest (Wikimetrics). It's important to note that 2 participants were also organizers (and active Wikimedians), so they possibly are adding to the count. |
2. # of new editors | 118 new accounts, between 3 and 5 currently active editors | 5 participants did 5 or more edits in the last two months (Wikimetrics). It's important to note that 2 participants were also organizers (and active Wikimedians), so they possibly are adding to the count. |
3. # of individuals involved | 160 | 156 participants + 4 organizers. |
4. # of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages | 48 distinct images | According to the Glamorous tool, 48 distinct new images are being used in Wikimedia projects (68 total uses). |
5. # of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects | 2784 new images | It's difficult to gather data about other projects. |
6. Absolute value of bytes added to or deleted from Wikimedia projects | 90.801 (Wikimetrics); 8.224.000.000 (non-deleted uploaded images) | Bytes added + Bytes deleted during September (Wikimetrics) |
- Learning question
- Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
- We didn't ask participants about this.
- Some of the organizers were visibly motivated after organizing the contest succesfully, and are aware of mistakes that were made so they can avoid them in the future.
Impact
editWhat impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?
- Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia improved their content about Colombian towns with the newly uploaded photos. In the case of Commons, even if the photos aren't being used in Wikimedia projects, they are available for the public to find.
- The reach of Wikimedia Commons was possibly increased, as some (probably most) of the contest participants possibly didn't know about the project.
- Participation was briefly increased.

- 1.601.472 COP
- Are there additional sources that funded any part of this project? List them here.
- NO
Remaining funds
edit- Are there any grant funds remaining?
- YES
- Please list the total amount (specify currency) remaining here. (This is the amount you did not use, or the amount you still have after completing your grant.)
- 48.527 COP (about 20 USD).
- If funds are remaining they must be returned to WMF, reallocated to mission-aligned activities, or applied to another approved grant.
- Please state here if you intend to return unused funds to WMF, submit a request for reallocation, or submit a new grant request, and then follow the instructions on your approved grant submission.
- While we would like to return the funds to WMF and clear completely the grant, we believe the amount is not worth the process (and would be possibly diluted by bank costs), so we'll probably request for reallocation. Any suggestion about uses for this money would be appreciated.
