The overall vision of Free Knowledge Africa is to promote free and open knowledge, particularly in the areas of travel, sports, tourism, geography, and cultural heritage, with a focus on Africa. The organization aims to bridge content gaps on Wikimedia projects related to these areas, promote the use of Wikimedia projects by Africans, and advocate for the GLAM sector in Africa. We are partaking in the contribution to Open GLAM through advocacy and documentation of items/works in the Public Domain in Nigeria. In previous years, we organized events, training sessions, contests (Afrosports, Explore Africa, Public Domain Items Documentation) and GLAM advocacy campaigns to achieve the organisational goals.
This proposal for the Wikimedia Community Funds - General Support aligns with Free Knowledge Africa's overall vision by seeking to support the organization's ongoing efforts to promote free and open knowledge and its advocacy work in the GLAM sector. Specifically, the proposal will provide funding to support the organization's ongoing work in documenting items in the Public Domain in Nigeria and its efforts to bridge content gaps related to sports, travel, tourism, and cultural heritage on Wikimedia projects.

We need articles that show the beauty in our sports bringing to light the African sports sector.
These activities are designed to support the key strategies of community engagement, stakeholder engagement, digital infrastructure, advocacy, and partnership building. - As we plan to apply for multi-year funding, we understand that detailed activity plans for Year 2 may not be possible at this stage. However, we have a high-level understanding of our programmatic work and planning for the next year.
In Year 2, we will focus on consolidating our efforts in Nigeria and expanding to other African countries. We will continue with our Free Knowledge Fellowship Program, Wiki Education Program, and public domain database development. We will continue our advocacy and outreach programs for librarians and sports professionals in Nigeria and other African countries. We plan to initiate partnerships with other organizations and institutions across the continent to collaborate on open knowledge initiatives and build digital infrastructure.
We plan to continue our work and expand our outreach to more African countries. We will sustain our Free Knowledge Fellowship Program and Wiki Education Program with the aim of having a network of open knowledge advocates in every African country. We will also expand our public domain database to include works from other African countries and make it a sustainable and valuable resource for all Africans. We will continue with our advocacy and outreach programs and build partnerships with other organizations and institutions to promote open access and knowledge sharing in Africa.
A multi-year grant is important to us because it will provide the stability and resources necessary to sustain our efforts over the next three years. Isaac Oloruntimilehin [User:Timmylegend] - (Director of Growth/Strategy) - He is an experienced Wikipedian, and the past leader of the Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin. He has organised various campaigns at the University of Ilorin Wikimedia community such as Nigeria Expedition, Explore Nigeria, 1Lib1Ref, Art+Feminism, Wiki Loves Africa, and Wikipedia pages wanting photos. He was a participant at Wiki Indaba 2019 and Wikimania 2021 conferences. He is the project and campaign lead.
Alaafiabami Oladipupo [User: Haylad] - (Director of Education/Research) - He has previously led the Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin, organized multiple meetups and Wiki loves Africa photo walks/events at the University Club in Ilorin and Ado-Ekiti in 2019 and 2020 respectively. He has previously organised the Afrocine Nigeria Contest and facilitated multiple events and training. He was also the Regional ambassador for the 2021 HACK4OPENGLAM during the 2021 CC summit. He will be in charge of training, recruiting and onboarding new members during the projects.
Bolaji Alabi [User:Bilijin] - (Director of Programs) - She is an experienced mobile developer and Wikimedian with a knack for prudence. She has been contributing to the Wikimedia project since 2018 and just handed over her leadership of the Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin. She is a board member (Vice Chair) of the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. She will facilitate the creation of landing pages, instructional videos/materials, virtual meetings and the selection of speakers/trainers for virtual training workshops for new members.
Olubusola Afolabi [User:Ifedohlapo] - (GLAM Associate) - She is a librarian, an experienced Wikimedian, and a one-time Events Manager at the Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin. She is interested in the GLAM space and advocates for Open Access practices in Cultural Heritage Institutions.

Our work aims to address the content gap by promoting the digitization and documentation of public domain works in Nigeria, with a focus on works related to women, indigenous languages, and diverse cultural backgrounds. We will also be working with schools of hospitality and tourism in Nigeria to promote the inclusion of knowledge related to gender and diverse cultural backgrounds in their curricula. Additionally, we will be conducting outreach and advocacy programs to encourage participation from underrepresented groups in the hospitality, tourism, and sports sectors. Through these efforts, we hope to ensure a greater representation of knowledge from diverse perspectives.

Our strategies for engaging participants, particularly those who are currently non-Wikimedians, include the following: 1. Partnering with relevant organizations: We will collaborate with hospitality, tourism, and sports organisations to identify potential contributors and encourage them to participate in the project. 2. Outreach and Advocacy: We will conduct outreach and advocacy programs to raise awareness of the importance of open knowledge and public domain works, and encourage more people to participate in the project. 3. Free Knowledge Fellowship Program: We will implement a Free Knowledge Fellowship Program to train and equip open knowledge advocates, who will serve as ambassadors for the project and help recruit new contributors. 4. Wiki Education Tourism Program: We will implement a Wiki Education Program with selected hospitality and tourism schools in Nigeria to introduce students to open knowledge and encourage them to contribute to Wikimedia projects.

We reached out to affiliates in the past year to support the Explore Africa and Afrosports contest. We have presented some of our plans at Wikimania and WikiIndaba. The project will be announced on the Wikiproject Africa discussion pages, Wikivoyage travellers pub, and African Wikimedians telegram group. We will share with some of the existing Wikimedia mailing lists and create a mailing list and a page on meta to inform people who sign up to follow the project's progress. The page will also allow us to seek input and feedback from the community along the way. We will also share this project on our social media pages to encourage participation.
14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.
We have established partnerships with the Nigerian Library Association in Kwara State and the Plateau State Tourism Corporation. They will assist in setting up the public domain database and executing the documentation of cultural heritage sites, respectively. We will also be engaging and partnering with GLAM and Local Heritage Institutions in Nigeria in a bid for them to adopt open licenses and open up their collections. We have partnered with some GLAM institutions in Kwara state in Nigeria previously. We have established relationships we want to transcend to some other part of Nigeria. Making them choose to release their works under creative commons licenses can be a difficult task to achieve, which shouldn't deter Us from educating them about the GLAM and them acknowledging that some of the items that they have in control are in the Public Domain. We are also looking towards starting the discussion on digitising some of these items in the Public Domain. We also have a partnership in the works with Library Aid Africa.
15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?
We hope to sustain and expand the work carried out in this proposal by building strong relationships with our partners and stakeholders, particularly in the hospitality, tourism, and sports sectors. We will establish ongoing collaborations with local universities and libraries to digitize and document public domain works in Nigeria, and to train and mentor students and professionals interested in contributing to Wikimedia projects.
In addition, we plan to explore opportunities for generating income and securing funding through corporate social responsibility initiatives, individual donations, and grants from other sources. We will also leverage our networks and collaborations to identify and apply for other relevant grants, particularly those focused on knowledge equity and cultural preservation.
Furthermore, we will establish a sustainable model for the Free Knowledge Fellowship Program and the Wiki Education Program that can be replicated and scaled up in other regions and countries. We will develop training materials and toolkits that can be shared with other Wikimedia affiliates and groups interested in implementing similar programs, and we will provide ongoing support and mentorship to ensure their success.
Overall, we believe that sustained and expanded partnerships, ongoing community engagement, and diversified funding sources are key to sustaining and scaling the impact of this proposal beyond the grant period.

- We anticipate several risks that could impact the implementation of our project, including external and internal risks.
External risks: 1. Political instability: There is a risk of political instability in the country that could affect the implementation of our project. We will mitigate this risk by being in constant communication with our partners and monitoring the situation in the country. 2. COVID-19 pandemic: The pandemic has already affected several projects worldwide, and it could also affect the implementation of our project. We will follow all necessary safety protocols, including encouraging online participation and limiting physical gatherings when necessary. 3, Access to internet and electricity: Nigeria has a poor internet and power supply, which could affect online participation. We will work with our partners to ensure that participants have access to the necessary infrastructure for online participation.
Internal risks:
1. Staff turnover: Staff turnover could lead to a loss of institutional memory and expertise. To mitigate this risk, we will ensure that all activities are documented, and new staff members are trained on project activities.

What are the most effective ways to promote awareness and understanding of copyright and open access issues among different stakeholder groups in Nigeria, and how can we best collaborate with these groups to promote knowledge equity? How can we create safer, more supportive, and more equitable spaces for Wikimedia contributors in Nigeria, and what are the best ways to promote and enforce Wikimedia's Universal Code of Conduct and Friendly Space Policy in local contexts?
