Main proposal
edit- 1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be a title for the Meta-Wiki page. (required)
- Wikimedia NYC 3-Year Operating Grant
- 2. Do you want to apply for the multi-year base funding for 3 years? (required) (only for returning applicants)
- Yes
- 2.1. Provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan? (required)
In year 2 and 3 we will continue to revitalize our members and volunteers with a specific focus on the safety of editors in our community as the political situation in the United States continues to bring challenges. We will also expand programming to train new editors and engage diverse audiences. As well as increase our brand and the positive representation of Wikimedia with the public.
A key goal for the chapter over the next three years is to increase our staffing capacity. We currently only have one paid staff position, our Executive Director, and it would be ideal to bring on more staff to support critical areas of work like fundraising and programs and alleviate some of the burnout volunteers feel from doing work traditionally held by paid staff.

Our current three year strategic plan ends June 30th, 2025 and our Board will be meeting at a Board retreat in April 2025 to draft a new strategic plan for the next three years. We do however, already have a good sense of the work ahead of us. We are in a critical moment in our country that presents significant challenges to the safety of our editors and the platform, but it also provides an opportunity for us to activate people across New York City and across the country to advance a free knowledge culture.
In terms of impact, Wikimedia NYC has always had a commitment to building a Wikimedia as diverse and democratic as the New York City subway. Over the next few years, our goal is to reach thousands of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, AAPI, MASA, women, and young people with activations that encourage participation in Wikimedia platforms through partnerships with libraries, museums, educational institutions, and community organizations who share our vision.
In 2025, we launched our first official Wikimedian in Residence position at City University of New York (CUNY). This is a two year program that includes a full time Wikimedian in Residence and a part time Documentarian working within the Office of Library Services. The goal is to make the university's research more accessible to the public on Wikimedia sites and increase editor retention among faculty and students.
From 2025 to 2027 we will continue to expand Wikicurious, our beginner level training for people who are new to editing or have very limited experience both within New York City and in other States across the US. Each event is focused on a different theme with different organizational partners and we have hosted several centered on topics such as Latin music, photography, Black artists, healthcare, and a special activation at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival. We look forward to continued partnerships with organizations that center underrepresented topics on Wikimedia platforms.
New York City marks its 400th anniversary in 2025, presenting a historic opportunity to reflect on its legacy and shape its future. For the 400th anniversary of New York City we are spotlighting New York City’s rich diversity by updating or creating Wikipedia articles for 400 neighborhoods and remarkable individuals. We’re calling on the public to nominate 400 impactful New Yorkers and 400 NYC neighborhoods that deserve a place on Wikipedia but aren’t yet featured or need to be updated. We have curated a jury who will help us decide on the final 400 lists that consists of representatives from the Museum of the City of New York, The New York Times, the Lenape Center, Latinx Project at NYU, and Black Gotham Experience. From January through December 2025, the Wikimedia NYC 400 campaign will host walking tours, Wikipedia edit-a-thons in multiple languages, and convenings to recognize the neighborhoods and individuals that have contributed to New York's community. In particular, it represents an opportunity to uplift hundreds of underrepresented individuals and communities that help fill some of the content gaps that exist on Wikipedia.
Wikimedia NYC will host Wikiconference North America in October 2025, bringing together 300 attendees from across the United States, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean for four days of cultural programming, workshops, and discussions. The conference gives us an opportunity to highlight the community here in New York City through partnerships with museums, libraries, and cultural institutions throughout the State.
The safety of our editors remains a major focus for us this year and we are developing programs and strategies to address this concern. We will continue to host our monthly Wiki Wednesday gatherings for the community and are experimenting with a monthly Free Culture Friday that brings together Wikimedia Foundation staff based in New York, community members, and other open source organizations for relationship building and knowledge exchange.
We will continue to host flagship events like Wikipedia Day and Wikidata Day. This year's Wikipedia Day was held at the Brooklyn Public Library on January 25th and we had 1,200 RSVP's and over 350 people attend the event in person.
