Africa boasts a rich tradition of storytelling and oral wisdom that has been passed down through generations. African quotes, proverbs, parables, and philosophical tales offer profound insights into life, spirituality, morality, and shared human experiences. In the modern era, African storytelling through films and literature continues this tradition, sharing cultural wisdom with the world.
The primary goal of this project is to amplify the voices and perspectives found within African films and literature, making their profound wisdom and quotes more accessible to a global audience. This initiative seeks to address the significant lack of diversity, representation, and proper documentation of quotes from African films and literature on Wikiquote.
Approaches to Achieve the Project's Goals:
- 1. Creating Awareness:
- Raising awareness is a critical element of our strategy. This will involve a series of engaging public talks and impactful social media campaigns. - By showcasing the positive impact of Africa's rich cultural heritage, we aim to inspire broader participation, generate support, and ultimately amplify the voices of African wisdom on a global scale. - This approach aligns with the overarching goal of the project.
- 2. Content Creation and Enhancement:
- To address the content gap on Wikiquote, we will organize a series of dynamic activities, including editing campaigns, workshops, both physical and online training sessions, and engaging edit-a-thons. - These initiatives will empower editors, whether they are newcomers or experienced editors, to create and enhance high-quality Wikiquote articles. This, in turn, bridges the content gap and ensures that valuable African quotes are properly represented on the platform. - Ultimately, this approach will create a more inclusive platform that reflects the richness of African storytelling traditions.
Through this project, we aim to engage and train individuals, both new and existing Wikimedian editors, on how to effectively create and improve Wikiquote articles. Our goal is to ensure that these powerful and inspiring quotes from African films and literature are appropriately acknowledged, preserved, and documented. This effort will significantly bridge the content gap concerning notable and remarkable quotes from African films and literature on Wikiquote, making them accessible to the world.
Upon successful implementation, this project will enhance Wikiquote's representation of quotes from African films and literature. By curating and promoting quotes from African literary works and films, we aim to educate, inspire, and celebrate the rich storytelling traditions and philosophies of Africa. This endeavor is a step towards preserving and sharing the profound wisdom that has been a part of African culture for generations.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
1. Creating Awareness:
To effectively reach both new and existing Wikimedian editors, we will utilize E-posters and flyers, strategically distributing them across platforms of our target participants. This approach ensures widespread event awareness, reaching a diverse audience. We will also establish an inclusive WhatsApp group for interested individuals to optimize efficient and cost-effective communication. Embracing an integrated messaging strategy, we will harmonize our messaging efforts to create a coherent and resonant message that underscores the event's significance and objectives.
- 2. Physical Training Day and Edit-a-Thon:
This hands-on training session is a pivotal element of our project, offering participants valuable practical skills and profound insights into the art of editing and contributing to Wikiquote to bridge the gap. Experienced volunteer facilitators will lead the training and use teaching aids, including projectors, slides, and Wikiquote training resources(https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14RkVv8Z4efjuoG-MY7dbiIqRCRajtZTn?usp=drive_link). Participants will learn how to make basic edits on Wikiquote, search and retrieve information, and improve or create articles to bridge content gaps. This interactive training empowers both new and experienced contributors, fostering inclusivity and enabling effective participation. Our dedicated team will provide invaluable guidance during the edit-a-thon, fostering a collaborative environment where participants can learn, apply their knowledge, and contribute successfully. This comprehensive approach includes real-time monitoring and assessment, ensuring participants receive tailored support to become better editors, ultimately equipping them with essential skills and knowledge for ongoing contribution and growth.
- 3. Virtual Training (Online Follow-up Training):
The virtual training, serving as an online follow-up to our project, represents a formal and structured continuation of skill development. Through this, participants will receive targeted instruction guided by experienced facilitators to further enhance their proficiency in editing and contributing to Wikiquote. This virtual training session underscores our commitment to sustained growth and knowledge refinement, ensuring participants remain equipped with the necessary tools and insights for impactful contributions.
