Africa's rich tradition of storytelling and oral wisdom, passed down through generations, is a tapestry woven with African quotes, proverbs, parables, and philosophical tales. These narratives offer profound insights into life, spirituality, morality, and our shared human experiences. In today's world, African storytelling through literature continues this tradition, sharing cultural wisdom globally.
The main challenges we address center on the underrepresentation and the significant lack of diversity, representation, and proper documentation of quotes from African literature on Wikiquote. The primary goal of this project is to amplify the voices within African literature, making their profound wisdom and quotes more accessible to a global audience.
Approaches to Achieve the Project's Goals:
1) Creating Awareness: This will involve series of engaging public talks and impactful social media campaigns. Our primary objective is to increase the visibility and accessibility of profound quotes from African literature globally, aiming to rectify the current lack of diversity and representation on Wikiquote. Through multi-channel outreach efforts, we intend to gather wider support and participation to showcase these quotes and perspectives that offer deep insights into life, spirituality and morality offered by African literature, thereby fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation for African literary heritage.
2)Content Creation and Enhancement: we will organize a series of dynamic activities, including editing campaigns, workshops, both physical and online training sessions, and engaging edit-a-thons. These initiatives will empower editors, whether they are new or experienced editors, to create and enhance high-quality articles, which in turn bridges the content gap and ensures that valuable quotes from African literature are properly documented on wikiquote. Ultimately, this approach will create a more inclusive platform that reflects the richness of African storytelling traditions by providing the tools, training, and focused efforts that enable comprehensive content creation and improvement driven by skilled editors dedicated to sharing impactful quotes and narratives from African literature and oral storytelling heritage with the world.
Through this project, we aim to engage and train individuals, both new and existing wikimedian editors, on how to effectively create and improve Wikiquote articles. Our goal is to ensure that these powerful and inspiring quotes from African literature are appropriately acknowledged, preserved, and documented. This effort will significantly bridge the content gap about notable and remarkable quotes from African literature on Wikiquote, making them accessible to the world.
Upon successful implementation, this project will enhance Wikiquote's representation of quotes from African literature and curate and promote quotes to educate, inspire, and celebrate the rich storytelling traditions and philosophies of Africa. By documenting these impactful words on Wikiquote, we hope to take a step towards recognizing the meaningful contributions of African literature. This endeavor aims to create a more inclusive, representative resource that acknowledges Africa's gift for imparting cultural insights through impactful stories.
