- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
The contest is one of the signature events of Bangla Wikipedia that is being organized for a long time on a yearly basis. The focus of the proposed contest is improving the quality of the existing articles of Bangla Wikipedia and at the same time recruiting new volunteers with a special focus on reducing the gap of content on women’s participation and contribution. In Bangla Wikipedia, almost 12% of the articles are stub or extremely small. But these articles include some really important and fundamental topics. During the meetups and online discussions, community members have expressed their concern regarding the issue and they agree that a contest can help to minimize this problem.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
Previously, the "Amar Ekushey Article Contest 2021" and "Amar Ekushey Article Contest 2022" aimed to increase the number of qualitative articles in Bangla Wikipedia. It got great participation, 220 articles in 2021 and 205 articles in 2022 got improved. Previously, the "Wikipedia Article Contest" targeted creating new articles in Bangla Wikipedia by translating the highly qualitative articles from English Wikipedia. The list is prepared by experienced Wikipedians. This contest became tremendously successful in terms of the number of new qualitative articles and the number of new active editors. The active editor number experienced significant growth in the time of contests (2017 and 2018: February-March, 2019: July-August, 2021: February-March, 2022:February-March). A lot of newcomers join the movement through this contest. This time, the contest will be focusing on improving existing articles instead of creating new ones.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
- Previously we did not take any initiative to enrich the capacity of the reviewers. This year we will have a special focus on developing the exuberance of them and make them organized so that the reviewers can be in a phase and dealing with the participant during the contest.
- We will be also focusing on developing the capacity of the organizers. Online as well as offline session will be conducted where they can exchange their views and can learn from one another as well as from the experienced Wikimedians.
