Art+Feminism Celebrate Women

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

To bridge the gender gap in Wikimedia projects, this campaign will focus on increasing the representation of Hausa women in art and culture. Many talented female artists, historians, and cultural figures remain undocumented, while female contributors often feel excluded or lack confidence in content creation. Through the Art+Feminism campaign, we aim to change this by amplifying women’s voices, highlighting their achievements, and fostering greater participation. By encouraging inclusivity and engagement, we seek to create a space where women feel empowered to share knowledge and contribute equally to Wikimedia projects.

However, several challenges hinder women's participation in Wikimedia activities. The lack of representation of female artists and historians has left their contributions largely invisible. Additionally, there is a significant gender gap among contributors, with only a few active Hausa women editors who often feel underrepresented or lack confidence. Many potential contributors are also unfamiliar with Wikimedia editing or find the process intimidating. Furthermore, cultural and social norms sometimes discourage women from engaging in Wikimedia projects, further limiting their participation.

To address these issues, our team will implement a series of targeted approaches. We will launch awareness campaigns on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as conduct local outreach to encourage participation. Collaborating with Feminist Coalition organization, Art and Culture Foundation will help source reliable information and engage more contributors. Additionally, we will build a supportive community where experienced editors mentor new participants, ensuring long-term engagement. Workshops will be conducted to train participants in editing and creating Wikipedia articles, particularly those focused on women in the arts. Finally, edit-a-thons will be organized to actively improve and create articles about women’s artistic contributions, using credible sources to close the existing knowledge gap.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

To accomplish the project's goals, we will start with pre-event planning and outreach by raising awareness through social media campaigns, distributing printed materials, and engaging with organizations like Feminist Coalition to build support for the initiative. Additionally, we will hold an online meeting with facilitators and community leaders to refine event logistics and ensure alignment with the campaign’s objectives. The training sessions will introduce participants to the Art+Feminism campaign, address the gender gap in Wikimedia, highlight the contributions and challenges of women in art, and facilitate interactive discussions through a panel session. Participants will also take part in hands-on activities such as identifying underrepresented content, brainstorming documentation strategies, and learning how to contribute effectively to Wikimedia projects. Following this, we will conduct an edit-a-thon, both in-person and online, where participants will improve existing articles and create new ones focused on women in art and cultural movements, with facilitators providing guidance to maintain content quality. To sustain engagement beyond the event, our post-event follow-up will track participant contributions using an event dashboard, issue certificates of participation to motivate continued involvement, and compile a comprehensive report outlining key achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. By implementing these structured activities and fostering collaborations, we aim to create a more inclusive Wikimedia space that accurately represents Hausa women in art and culture.

To engage these participants, we will initiate awareness campaigns via social media platforms and distribute flyers within the local community. Throughout the event, participants will be actively involved in the planned training and edit-a-thon sessions. Following the activities, we will keep the momentum going by establishing a social media group or page, providing ongoing guidance and addressing any challenges or questions that arise from the participants.
