Documentary Photograph of Ogu Deities

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The Ogu people, sometimes called Egun people, are an ethnic group located majorly in Lagos and Ogun State in the South-Western part of Nigeria. The Ogu people have varieties of dialects including Thevi, Xwela, Seto, and Toli and they also account for about 15% of the indigenous population of Lagos State.

There are colossal content gaps on notable topics about Ogu culture, cuisines, heritage, and people on Wikimedia projects including Wikimedia Commons, and Wikipedia. There is low content relating to Ogu deities on Wikimedia Commons. This project aim at documenting Ogu deities such as Tron, Tolegba, Ogun, Zangbeto, Ule using photography. The images would be taken, properly described, and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

We plan to engage at least 5 professional volunteer photographers, and each of them would work in different locations in Lagos, and Ogun. They would be supported by 5 volunteers who will be responsible for documenting the metadata for each content. At the completion of the shooting, the photographers would be trained on how to upload their respective photos on Wikimedia Commons. That would also serve as a way to engage the photographers and retain them as volunteer members of the Wikimedia Commons Community.

Articles would be created for images with no corresponding articles in Gungbe and the English Wikipedia. We envisaged that at least 50 new Wikipedia articles would be created in Gungbe and the English Wikipedia.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We would develop the following activities as part of these approaches or strategies.

  • Identify Ogu deities and group them based on their location (we have a list already)
  • Meeting, and engagement of volunteer professional photographers
  • Prepare the format for metadata
  • Establish a contact person in the targeted locations
  • Design timeline for shooting, training, and upload of content to Commons

As part of our strategy, we will ensure that photographers work in different locations. Based on my experience as a professional photographer who has worked on similar projects in the past, having photographers work in a different location is an effective way to get the desired results for the following reasons :

  • It saves time, and energy
  • It minimized or eliminate duplications
  • It saves cost
4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
  • User:Yemi festus - Project manager, and photographer (volunteer)
  • User:Fellyx - Photographer (volunteer)
  • User:Amazingworld01 - Photographer
  • Kehinde Fagbeji - Photographer (volunteer)
  • Joseph Semasa - Photographer (volunteer)
  • Enitan Okoya - Metadata manager
6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Content Gender gap, Other global topics for impact (topics considered to be of global importance), Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Our work will add at least 500 new pieces of content relating to Ogu people, culture, and tradition that are underrepresented on Wikimedia Commons, and at least 50 new articles would be created on Wikipedia.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Culture, heritage or GLAM , Diversity

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Not applicable

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants are a mix of Wikipedians, professional photographers, and other volunteers. The Wikimedians are from Commons, Gungbe, and Wikidata communities. Before the activities, there would be meetings to engage the participants on the proposed modality, documentation prepared and strategy designed. There would be a zoom call to share ideas and monitor the progress of the shooting. A WhatsApp group would be created to further engage the volunteers. This strategy has worked for similar projects.

The professional photographer would be encouraged to upload some of the images in their archive as a way to engage them after the program. They would be involved in designing another project. This way, we can give them a sense that they are part of the Wikimedia movement, and they can be involved in decision-making.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will share the friendly space policy and the Universal Code of Conduct with all participants. This way, they are aware of the minimum expected behavior or acceptable behavior. Participants would be treated equally, regardless of their gender, age, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal.
