GIJ Editathon Series
- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
Ghana Institute of Journalism is a Ghanaian higher institution. It's almost 60 years old and has no Wiki Club or community. This project will introduce new editors and volunteers from the institution to Wikipedia and Wikidata, as well as provide them with information about the movement. Because the institution is 90% dominated by women, this initiative will concentrate on articles about gender, ethnicity, religion, and culture.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
Our primary strategy for this project will be capacity building. We will hold six offline training events on campus, which will be organized by the institution's SRC leaders. Participants will receive training in everything from Wikipedia and Wikidata fundamentals to quality editing. The emphasis of these articles will be on the items, appearance, style, categories, references, size, hyperlinks, headers, and subheadings of the article.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
We hope to teach at least 180 students, the majority of whom will be women, how to edit Wikipedia pages and submit objects to Wikidata. We'll also teach them how to stay active in the Wikimedia movement, such as how to communicate with the Ghanaian Wikimedia community and the movement's various campaigns and other worldwide efforts. This is critical for increasing interest and participation in the cause. We plan to explain the movement and its platforms at the first event, begin Wikipedia training at the second, hold a full-fledged Wikipedia editathon at the third, an introduction to Wikidata at the fourth, a full-fledged Wikidata editathon at the fifth, and conclude the project with a contest. To bridge the gender gap in content, we will prioritize female and political stories.
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.
Not applicable
- 5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
The event will be organized by the institution's student representative council (SRC) leadership. They will handle all logistics necessary to ensure the event's success. I will be the event facilitator, and my colleague User:Lamalif will be in charge of content curation and technical support during the trainings.
- 6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.
Content Gender gap, Geography, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial
- 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
Participants will be editing articles about female athletes, religious leaders, diplomats, and educators, among others.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Diversity
- 8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?
Gender Identity, Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Age
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
The students at the institution are our intended audience for this endeavor. Everyone is included, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or ethnic group. Before the first event, SRC executives will raise awareness and sensitize students by disseminating leaflets and banners, as well as sharing anecdotes from experienced editors. We intend to keep participants engaged after the events by mentoring them through personal editing and curating other articles for them to improve or create in their spare time.
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
We will provide a friendly space policy in our registration form for people who wish to engage in our events. Harassment in any form will not be tolerated.
- 11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.
The SRC and institution have been adequately informed about the movement and our planned activities due to the nature of this project. I also contacted the LUCG Wikimedia Community team about it, and We intend to share resources such as Internet routers and facilitators if necessary.
