Introduction to Wikibook in Nigeria
- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
The Wikimedia foundation has a lot sister projects aside wikipedia in which Wikibooks is one them. All sister projects are focused on the goal of giving free knowledge on All area of information for the access of Every Internet user.
- 1.This project is targeted at bridging the content gap about Nigeria on Wikibooks, after my research on contents and articles available on Wikibooks , It is discovered that contents on Nigerian history, culture, arts, languages and religion have no content on Wikibooks .Wikibooks as a textbook reference an open source for free knowledge distribution should have more than enough contents about the aforementioned categories lacking contents. I believe this change will contribute massively and effectively to the free knowledge movement of the Wikimedia foundation.
I. Languages: Nigeria has over 250 recognised languages and from my research only Yoruba language has a little content about it which is not fully complete. With other languages not having articles about them. https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Yoruba Bridging content gap on Nigerian language is one of our goal for this project II. History: Nigerian is a country with lots of history but lack content about them on Wikibooks. We hope to also bridge that content gap on that. III. Arts, Culture and Religion also lack articles about them on Wikibooks, we see these projects as a way to actively contributing to the free knowledge goal of the Wikimedia foundation.
- 2.This change is important because new and existing editors will understand how to become users of wikibooks as a major tool for textbook references in carrying out assessments and projects for school curriculum not only to be users of wikibooks but also contributors who will explore and expand the range of free knowledge contents to Wikibooks which would stay relevant in our changing world.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
1.Our major approach is to create an awareness on the existence of Wikibooks as one of Wikimedia's sister project in Nigeria,This is because existing editors expand only the range of free knowledge by editing only on Wikipedia,Wikicommons and wikidata leaving out Wikibooks and as such new and existing editors would be encouraged in contributing to free knowledge on Wikibooks.
- 2.Also,one of key approach is to train new and existing editors on how to effectively make impactful edits on Wikibooks and also guiding the editors on how to prevent IP blockages and also preventing them from being blocked while editing on Wikibooks.
- 3.We will also have an in person physical Meetup and online trainings as a way effecting our strategies to brings these changes in action. During the physical meetup, new and existing editors will be trained by highly experienced Wikibooks editors which will enable them to learn how to make quality research and edit, create and improve articles about Nigeria's history, science development, geography governmental systems, language and religion.
- 4.We will be having one physical training and two online/virtual training spanning up to a month, where new editors and existing editors would make their first basic edit on Wikibooks and also to further demystify the problems and challenges encountered by the editors while editing and also touching other areas required for success of the edit a thon.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
1.One in-person physical training will be followed by another two days online training.
- 2. Edit-a-thon will follow where participants can practicalize all they have learnt during the training and there will be some form of motivation to participants with highest number of edits. Certificates will also be given out to participants.
- 3. Follow-up on all active partcipants to see how well they are improving on the skills gained during the project.
