Promote equitable education: Kiwix4schools Program in Rwanda will ensure that all students have the same opportunity to access educational content regardless of their geographic location or internet access. By providing offline access, the project promotes more equal educational opportunities.


Increased access to knowledge: One of the key challenges we aim to address is the lack of educational resources in rural areas. Many students in these areas lack reliable Internet access and traditional educational resources. With Kiwix software, which provides offline access to vast repositories of teaching materials such as Wikipedia, textbooks, and other teaching materials, we can bridge this gap and give students the tools they need to learn and grow.


Empowering Underrepresented Communities: Another key challenge we are trying to tackle is the marginalization of rural communities in the digital age. Rural areas often face structural barriers to educational opportunities and technological advancement. By launching Kiwix4schools, we are empowering students and Wikimedians in these areas to use technology for learning and knowledge sharing. This role not only provides students with access to valuable educational resources but also enables them to be active contributors to the dissemination of knowledge in their communities.


Empower teachers: Kiwix4schools Program in Rwanda will support teachers in delivering effective and engaging lessons by providing them with a large archive of teaching materials. The program will provide teachers with up-to-date information, a variety of learning materials, and the ability to create personalized learning experiences for their students.


Contributing to SDGs: The implementation framework of this initiative will contribute to the implementation of UN SDG 4: Quality Education, UN SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and UN SDG 17: Partnerships for Goals.

Main challenges that Kiwix4schools program in Rwanda in Rwanda is aiming to address are: Expensive Data/Internet: Even if there's internet, it costs a lot to use it. This makes it hard for students and schools to get the stuff they need online. Not Enough Books: Many schools in Rwanda don't have enough books or good learning materials. This makes it tough for students to learn well. Unequal Education: Some parts of Rwanda don't have good schools or materials for learning. This means some students have better chances at school than others. Teacher Training: Teachers in faraway places have a hard time getting training to teach better because they can't easily go to workshops or get resources, With Kiwix software they will easily get the contents without internet.

We will translate the user manual/Kiwix installation guidance so that any student can install Kiwix software without encountering any challenges. We will print copies for teachers and students, enabling them to install or reinstall Kiwix anytime they require it.

We plan to host 2 days training to train Rwanda Wikimedians, secondary school teachers, and university students in Rwanda to teach them how to contribute to Wikimedia projects and share knowledge using Kiwix, to equip them with necessary skills so they can contribute to training secondary school students .

We eagerly anticipate collaborating with 2 Secondary Schools in Eastern Province of Rwanda,(Groupe Scolaire Gishari and Group Scolaire Ruhunda, where we previously implemented the Reading Wikipedia in The Classroom project) which are located in an area in which they can not easily get a good internet connection for their computers to access online teaching/learning materials. Our aim is to educate them on how to install Kiwix Software on their computers and how to effectively utilize Wikimedia projects contents, Assist participants in selecting educational content relevant to their needs and interests. Offer suggestions for available resources and how to download them for offline use.

Edit A Thon: We will Provide an overview of Wikimedia, wikimedia projects and Wikipedia editing, including its principles, guidelines, and the importance of contributing to the platform.

Jacques NIYIGENA (Username: TheJackNation): I am an experienced Wikimedian and Kiwix4Schools Ambassador, I have undergone comprehensive training and mentorship in the use of KiwiX software, provided by OpenFoundation West Africa. Serving as an ambassador for the program in Rwanda, I am deeply committed to promoting Free Knowledge through Wikimedia projects. With a rich background in Wikimedia endeavors, I have actively participated in various Wikimedia contests, including Wiki Loves Monuments 2022, Wiki Loves Women - She Said Campaign, Afrosport Campaign, Wiki Loves Afrodemics, Wiki Loves Women - Women in Education Contest in Nigeria, Explore Africa Contest in Nigeria, and Mois de la contribution de la Francophone. My dedication to knowledge sharing and collaboration has garnered recognition, having been awarded nine times as one of the top contributors by the Wikimedia Community User Group Rwanda. Additionally, I have organized diverse contests such as "Reading Wikipedia in The Classroom in Rwanda, "Rwanda Going Green Mindset Lifestyle Awareness," "Digital Accessibility with Inclusion of People with Disabilities," and "Urban Wetlands Protection."

Rosine Igirimpuhwe (Username: Rosine IGIRIMPUHWE): She is a dedicated Wikimedia volunteer in Rwanda, celebrated for winning multiple writing and photography competitions, including WikiGap Kigali, Wiki Loves Women, Wiki Loves Monuments, and Wiki for Human Rights in Rwanda. In 2023, she spearheaded the Wiki Loves campaign as Project Lead, enhancing participation and impact. Passionate about gender equality and cultural heritage, she champions diverse voices and societal issues through her contributions. Committed to community-building, she mentors aspiring creators and facilitates workshops. Rosine IGIRIMPUHWE embodies the spirit of collaborative knowledge-sharing and continues to inspire positive change within the Wikimedia community, both locally and globally.

Rebecca Nyinawumuntu (Username: RebeccaRwanda): She is a passionate community activist in open data, focusing on underrepresented community growth , governance and advocacy in her volunteer work. Her dedication extends to active participation in the Wikimedia Foundation Movement strategy Implementation plan in the Africa Great Lakes region. As an MCDC ambassador, She Facilitates the Movement Charter Drafting Committee community conversations . have been leading the organization of Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM), Wiki for Human Rights, and Wiki Loves Women (WLW) initiatives in Rwanda.

Derrick Ndahiro: (Username: Ndahiro derrick): He is an experienced Wikimedian and a community leader who founded the Wikimedia Community User Group Rwanda. He possesses skills and experience in organizing Wikimedia projects and events.

The primary targets are secondary school students residing in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, specifically those attending Groupe Scolaire Ruhunda and Groupe Scolaire Gishari. Additionally, secondary targets include secondary school teachers and Wikimedians who will help raise awareness about Kiwix. To engage participants before and during the activities, we will conduct outreach sessions, distribute informational materials, and hold meetings with school administrators. During the activities, interactive sessions, hands-on training, and group discussions will be organized to ensure active participation. After the activities, we plan to follow up with participants through surveys, feedback sessions, and continued communication to assess their progress and address any challenges they may encounter.

I approached the Wikimedia Community User Group Rwanda and informed them that I had completed a training/mentorship program regarding Kiwix4Schools. I expressed my desire to initiate the implementation of this program in Rwanda to assist students and individuals who face difficulties accessing free knowledge content due to internet connectivity issues. They expressed their willingness to work with me and support me during the implementation of this program.
