Global templates and Lua modules are a perennial community request[1]. However, due to technical and other reasons, they are still not possible. Last year I created a tool called Synchronizer[2] that helps developers compare and synchronize Lua modules across multiple Wikimedia wikis. The tool has had moderate success, with several users and modules being updated[3]. However, it still hasn't become really popular. I believe the reason is that most Lua developers don't know about it. But there's hope! When a Lua module is updated using the Synchronizer tool, an edit summary is left that includes a link to the tool, which is bound to be noticed by active Lua developers. Thus, the more modules that get updated, the more developers will know about Synchronizer and are likely to use it, which in turn would attract more developers, etc. So, my idea is simple: carefully pick up some Lua modules and synchronize them in several wikis, so that more developers find out about the Synchronizer tool and start using it. In the process, I'll improve the tool with what I learn as well as the Lua modules I synchronize.

1. Select some Lua modules that are good candidates for global synchronization. Good candidates would be modules that are moderately to widely used and have little to no need for localization (see the guide I wrote at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Multilingual_Templates_and_Modules about synchronizing modules for context).
2. One by one, update the selected Lua modules so that they are fit for synchronization and synchronize them in every wiki where they are used (usually hundreds of wikis each).

Just me. I'm a long-time Wikimedia volunteer and freelance web developer specialized in MediaWiki, the software of Wikipedia. I currently work as the lead developer at Appropedia, the sustainability wiki, and contribute back to the movement with the knowledge, skills and code I develop there.

Lua developers from all Wikimedia wikis. The way I will engage them is by proactively updating Lua modules they may be watching. Before doing so, I'll identify the "master" version of each module and reach out to its main developer (if there is one) to let them know about my intention and this proposal.
