CHANGE: I aim at getting the already started Tyap Dictionary project by the Tyap Language Development Board (TLDB) published under free license.
CHALLENGES: Currently, translating items in the Tyap Wikipedia, Tyap Wiktionary, and other Wikimedia projects are quite laborious and inconsistent with different editors translating certain modern words in several ways. Many others find it difficult to translate articles or create entries due to the absence of a dictionary to serve as a translation aid to support their translation works. The Tyap Dictionary (A̠gban Swáng A̠lyiat nTyap) being prepared by the TLDB has reached a point where progress in its development has not been seen for years now. However, they, at the moment have agreed to releasing the material online for free if only they can get the hard copy published.
APPROACH: After a private discussion with the TLDB leadership, the plan on how to get the dictionary's first edition completed was derived. This plan includes getting a team of Tyap Wikimedia and TLDB editors to go the Nigerian Bible Translation Trust (NBTT) in the city of Jos in January 2025 to make use of the facilities available, get a short orientation about dictionary writing, and use the available templates they have at NBTT to compile the entries for a period of three weekends. This team would consist of eight editors; about three from the TLDB, and five from the Tyap Wikimedians User Group (TWU). The review of the entire work would then commence from late January to late February 2025. The printing and publishing of the work (including online publishing) should take place later in March 2025. For the online publishing, I aim at getting the Tyap Dictionary published online on Wikimedia Commons under the CC BY-SA 1.0 license. For the hard copy of the dictionary, the aim is to produce about 1,000 copies and launch it with the Tyap-speaking community.
