Brazil's lush and diverse natural landscapes are genuinely awe-inspiring. From the vast stretches of the Amazon rainforest to the stunning waterfalls of Iguazu, the country boasts a myriad of protected natural sites that showcase its rich biodiversity. However, there is a significant problem—the sites' scarcity of free photographs limits their potential for raising awareness and promoting them to a larger audience.

This shortage of images makes it challenging for people to learn about and appreciate these natural treasures, leaving them underappreciated and underutilized. To address this issue, we need to increase the availability of free photographs of Brazil's protected natural sites. This would make it easier for people to learn about and appreciate these areas, promote the importance of preserving them, and encourage more people to visit, thus supporting conservation efforts.

Despite Brazil's vast and unique biodiversity, the country is experiencing a significant loss, primarily due to deforestation, land use changes, and climate change. One of the most devastating consequences of biodiversity loss is the endangerment of many animal species in Brazil. Habitat destruction, hunting, and climate change are the main factors contributing to this problem.

This biodiversity loss has dire consequences for ecosystems, their services, and human well-being. Raising awareness about the loss of biodiversity in Brazil and the importance of protecting and conserving it is essential. Increasing public knowledge and understanding can encourage people to take action to reduce their impact on the environment and support conservation efforts.

Updated Project Plan: Serra do Mar Photographic Expedition (Cunha & Cubatão Nuclei)

edit
1. Executive Summary:
edit

This document details the finalized executive plan for the "Serra do Mar Collaborative Photographic Expedition," a Foto.wiki.br project. This initiative aims to comprehensively document the rich biodiversity and historical/cultural heritage of the Serra do Mar mountain range, specifically within the Cunha and Cubatão Nuclei (administrative units of the State Park). A dedicated team of 6 specialized photographers and 1 coordinator will conduct a 4-day field expedition, employing agile methodologies to ensure maximum efficiency and adaptability. This project directly addresses the critical need for high-quality visual resources on Wikimedia Commons, strengthening the representation of the Atlantic Forest and the region's unique historical narrative. It aligns with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This plan covers the project's justification, objectives, scope, methodology, detailed timeline, comprehensive budget, risk assessment, and clearly defined evaluation metrics.

2. Introduction and Justification:
edit

Given the unexpected closure of Viruá National Park for ten months due to renovations and the significant impact of the 2024 wildfires on our alternative location in Brasília, we've had to postpone the expedition. We will run the activity in May, after raining season in the southern portion of Brazil. Viruá the best date is around October, it is a wetland, so it is necessary to be there on the correct moment, to be able to photograph.

The Serra do Mar, a crucial component of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, harbours exceptional biodiversity and a complex history of human interaction. However, its visual representation on Wikimedia Commons remains fragmented and insufficient, lacking the high-quality, freely licensed imagery needed for effective scientific communication, environmental education, cultural preservation, and broad public access to knowledge about this vital region. This expedition directly tackles this challenge by undertaking a focused, intensive photographic documentation effort.

Choice of Nuclei and Rationale:

To maximize impact within the 4-day timeframe and represent the Serra do Mar's diverse character, two distinct nuclei have been strategically selected:

  • Núcleo Cubatão (Itutinga-Pilões Nucleus): This nucleus provides a unique intersection of significant biodiversity and substantial industrial and historical heritage. The presence of the historic Caminhos do Mar (Old Sea Road), the Calçada do Lorena (paved path from 1792), and remnants of the São Paulo Railway allow for documentation of engineering feats within a rich natural setting. Furthermore, its proximity to the Cubatão industrial complex offers a compelling narrative about environmental challenges, regeneration, and the ongoing relationship between industry and conservation. Photographing this nucleus aligns with SDGs 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities - cultural heritage), and 15 (Life on Land), while supporting the 2030 Strategy's focus on Knowledge Equity (filling content gaps related to industrial heritage and environmental impact) and Innovating in Free Knowledge.
  • Núcleo Cunha: Situated in the high-altitude region of the Serra do Mar, this nucleus offers a different perspective, featuring well-preserved stretches of Atlantic Forest, including cloud forests and high-altitude grasslands (campos de altitude), with distinct, often endemic, flora and fauna. Its relative remoteness means many species and landscapes are under-documented on Wikimedia Commons. Cunha also possesses a rich cultural heritage, including traditional pottery and rural communities, providing opportunities for respectful cultural documentation. This aligns with SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities - cultural heritage), 13 (Climate Action - documenting sensitive ecosystems), 15 (Life on Land - high biodiversity), and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth - potential for sustainable tourism). It strongly supports Recommendation 8 (Identify Topics for Impact) and Recommendation 9 (Innovate in Free Knowledge) of the 2030 Strategy.

This combination allows the team to capture a diverse range of subjects, optimizing the expedition's contribution to Wikimedia Commons.

3. Project Objectives:
edit
  • Main Objective: To produce and publish a minimum of 700 high-quality, freely licensed photographs on Wikimedia Commons, comprehensively documenting the biodiversity (flora, fauna, ecosystems, landscapes) and the historical/cultural heritage (architecture, historical sites, traditional elements where appropriate) of the selected Cunha and Cubatão Nuclei within the Serra do Mar State Park.
  • Secondary Objectives:
    • Document a significant and diverse range of plant and animal species (including observable tracks), specific ecosystems (e.g., cloud forest, restinga remnants near Cubatão), unique geological formations, and iconic landscapes within each nucleus.
    • Capture the distinct cultural and historical heritage elements of each nucleus, including architectural details of historical structures (Cubatão) and aspects of traditional rural life (Cunha, respecting community consent).
    • Create rich, accurate, and standardized metadata for all photographs using relevant templates and controlled vocabularies, facilitating searchability and reuse.
    • Integrate a high percentage of the uploaded images with corresponding Wikidata items, linking the visual content to structured data and enhancing the knowledge graph.
    • Create or significantly improve a pre-defined number of Wikipedia articles in relevant languages (primarily Portuguese, but potentially English and others) related to the documented species, locations, historical sites, and cultural elements, using the newly produced photographs for illustration.
    • Strengthen the technical skills (advanced photography techniques, metadata creation, agile workflow management) and collaborative capacity of the Foto.wiki.br team through practical experience.
    • Engage respectfully and appropriately with local park staff and community members (where applicable and planned), potentially gathering local knowledge to enrich metadata and fostering positive relationships.

      • Very low viewership/reuse numbers for the uploaded images after 6 months.
    • Qualitative:
      • Noticeable issues with technical quality (blurriness, poor exposure) across a significant portion of the collection.
      • Inconsistent, incomplete, or inaccurate metadata.
      • Lack of diversity in the photographic subjects, missing key elements of the nuclei.
      • Negative feedback from the community or partners regarding image quality or project execution.
      • Significant delays (>3 weeks) in the project timeline or exceeding the budget by more than 15% without prior approval.
      • Significant team conflicts impacting project delivery or poorly documented retrospective/lessons learned.
11. Evaluation and Reports:
edit
  • Continuous Monitoring: Daily Scrums will track task completion and identify impediments. Kanban boards will provide visual progress updates. Daily reviews will assess quality and target achievement.
  • Evaluation: The Final Retrospective will be a key evaluation point for team process and learning. Post-processing includes rigorous quality control for images and metadata. Success will be measured against the defined metrics (Section 10).
  • Reports: A comprehensive final project report will be produced, detailing the methodology, activities undertaken, quantitative and qualitative results against metrics, budget execution, risk management outcomes, challenges faced, lessons learned, and recommendations. This report will be shared publicly on the Foto.wiki.br wiki and communicated to relevant stakeholders (funders, partners, Wikimedia community).
12. Sustainability and Next Steps:
edit
  • Digital Legacy: The +700 high-quality, freely licensed photographs will permanently enrich Wikimedia Commons, serving as a valuable resource for education, research, conservation, and public understanding of the Serra do Mar for years to come.
  • Organizational Learning: Documented lessons learned from the agile process, logistical challenges, and photographic approaches will directly inform the planning and execution of future Foto.wiki.br expeditions and documentation projects, improving efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Partnership Building: Positive interactions with park authorities Instituto Florestal, local guides, or community members can pave the way for deeper collaborations on future projects, potentially including joint training or conservation initiatives.
  • Content Dissemination and Reuse: The produced photographic collection will be actively promoted and serve as a foundation for future Foto.wiki.br initiatives, such as online exhibitions, educational materials (e.g., field guides snippets), scientific outreach campaigns, and thematic workshops, thus extending the expedition's impact beyond the initial uploads.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Our team comprises over 30 photographers specializing in various types of nature photography, such as wildlife, landscapes, and macro photography. These photographers have worked for prestigious organizations like BBC, National Geographic, etc. All team members are volunteers, dedicating their time and expertise to the Wiki Loves Earth initiative. Many of our team members are also science communicators, passionate about sharing knowledge and raising awareness about environmental issues. Additionally, we have experts in social media, particularly among science communicators.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our target participants are Brazilians interested in nature photography and environmental conservation. We will focus on engaging those less represented in the Wikimedia Environment. We will engage them through various means, including social media outreach, targeted email campaigns, and personal invitations to participate in Wiki Loves Earth. Promotion will include social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as reaching out to local photography groups and associations. Additionally, we plan to host a photo exhibition featuring previous WLE participants. After the contest, we plan to maintain momentum with a fun and exciting photo expedition. This expedition will explore local areas of interest, offering opportunities for participants to meet like-minded people, learn new skills, and engage with the Wikimedia community. To retain participants, we are creating a supportive network of photographers where they can share their work, seek feedback, and continue learning from each other. Workshops will also be offered for those wishing to develop their skills further and contribute to Wikimedia Environment through photography.

Learning and metrics

edit
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

We get to some questions we want to answer by the end of WLE: How many contributors and photos did WLE bring? How have participants' perspectives on biodiversity conservation changed after participating? What factors could motivate participants to continue contributing to Wikimedia Envoriment after the WLE? What were the barriers? How effective was the WLE in bringing in new participants or communities? Did participants feel welcome, safe, and supported during the WLE? What were some ongoing challenges? Did participants gain the skills and motivation necessary to continue contributing to Wikimedia projects? Did new organizers develop the skills and motivation needed to continue participating as organizers? What types of support and activities interest participants who want to learn more about the Wikimedia community?
