- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
Providing basic design training to users who cannot design vector maps and diagrams within the WMTurkic community, giving them the ability to create maps related to their own countries and the Turkic world.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
What: Turkic Languages User Group Design Training Program is a training series targeting users who are members of WMTurkic user communities.
How: The training program, which will be divided into 8 weeks, will be conducted face-to-face and online in Turkey, as well as hybrid online for other participating countries, taking into account the country hours. The language of instruction will be Turkish in Turkey and English in other countries.
Why: Maps and diagrams related to the Turkish world and countries are usually made by users in other countries. With this training series, users in the Turkish world will learn how to create maps and diagrams in other image formats, especially vector (SVG). Thus, users in the Turkish world will be able to create maps and diagrams for their own countries.
Where: The trainings will be held in the countries where WMTurkic member user groups are located: Azerbaijan, Bashkortostan, South Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Cyprus, Kyrgyzstan, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Uzbekistan, Russia, Saha, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Tuva and Ukraine.
When: The trainings are planned to start in March 2023 at the latest, after the completion of the requirements such as grant, training curriculum.
Who: This training will be given by Yılmaz Caner Özyayıkçı (User: Kurmanbek) under the umbrella of the Wikimedia Community Turkic Languages User Group.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
Week 1: Informing about the training program, meeting the participants and installing the necessary programs and tools Week 2: File types and design program overview Week 3: Obtaining simple shapes with drawing tools Week 4: Creating diagrams with simple shapes Week 5: Introduction to simple map drawings and map creation with writing tools Week 6: Localizing existing maps and diagrams Week 7: Uploading works correctly to Wikimedia Commons Week 8: Graduation project
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

- 5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
My user groups are always ready for support. If necessary, we can talk to the members and distribute the tasks.
- 6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.
Not applicable
- 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
I have found that users in the Turkic world have very low rates of mapping and uploading them to Commons. For this reason, we will provide map and diagram design training to users, and we will ensure that more map and diagram content comes out of the Turkic world.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Education, Open Technology
- 8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?
Not applicable
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
Participants will be members of the Wikimedians of Turkic Languages User Group. Users will apply with the application form that will be open for a certain period of time, then they will be included in the training program. The progress of the participants will be measured with small exercises that will be given after each week. At the end of the 8th week, a graduation project task will be given. Those who complete the task in the required criteria will receive a certificate of achievement, and those who do not will be selected with priority for the next training program by only obtaining a participant certificate.
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
The success rates of the participants will only be seen between the participant and the trainer. Thus, obstacles such as unfair competition and peer bullying will be overcome.
- 11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.
