CHANGES THE PROPOSAL WILL BRING
1. Skill Development and Growth of Community Members The proposal will help participants develop their skills on all levels, ranging from research and development skills, technical skilss for Wikimedia projects, project management skills, graphic design skills, video editing and content creation skills as well as photography skills, one major skill that the proposal will help in developing community members is on the part of Digitization, training and upskilling community members as many as possible on the technical aspects of the digitizing, metadata creation, and indexing as well.
2. Capacity building of community
The proposal aims to elevate the capacity levels of the community members and the general wiki community in Nigeria. It involves all-around capacity building, from personal development to life skills acquisition, leadership prowess, wiki skills, and general community buildup on various levels and strata.
3. Awareness creation for Wiki Projects
The proposal will enhance the awareness of Wikimedia projects among varying Wikimedia community user groups. Posters that will be made during the course of the proposal will be used to create awareness and help newly onboarded members with the wikimedia projects. this proposal aims to foster awareness across all schools of Architecture and Heritage studies and help onboard as many as possible to enhance quality professional contributions to the wiki projects.
4. Goal-oriented Training and Mentorships At the center of the proposal lies training and retraining. The trainings will run for the entire course of the project, and the training comes alongside mentorship from the trainers. Some of the trainings that are already on the pipeline based on this proposal include the OpenRefine batch upload and editing training, the Pattypan training, the wikipedia beginners training, and the Wikidata editing training and this training will help augment the part of capacity building and skills development
5. Sustainable Retention of Members Conversations about this proposal also delved into sustainable retention of the proposal and the proposal aims to put sustainability at its forefront by engaging the community members and participants of the project, distributing tasks, ensuring everyone is carried along and hosting physical events to connect and bond to ensure retention of participants While ensuring sustainable quality contributions to Wikimedia.
Problems to solve
1. Contribution Limitation: Most community members are newly onboarded, and this proposal serves as a means to equip them with relevant skills and knowledge needed to aid and support contributions and unhinge them from the varying limitations that plagued on them due to uncertainties about how to contribute to different projects and hence building their capacity, preparing them ahead of other projects
2.Skill limitation: There is a problem of skill limitation in the community as this project is not a regular project, and hence the need to upskill participants and community members generally is very important. This will eliminate the barrier of no skill and ensure that contributors and participants have the required skill needed to contribute to the Wiki space; without these skills being taught, it will be difficult to engage community members, and engagement strategies will be futile if the barrier of unskilfulness is not broken. The proposal aims to solve this challenge.
3. Growth redundancy: The growth of community members is important to different wiki projects; we have spotted this as a challenge and a problem that needs to be sorted. We have decided to handle the problem via the proposal. The proposal will help participants grow on and off the wiki, which will automatically impact the quality of contributions to wiki projects.
4. Loss of interest: The proposal aims to solve the problem of interest loss in Wiki activities by actively involving the participants in different interesting activities and increasing interest through the diverse parts of the proposal. One tool we are using to capture the attention of participants is the user-friendly graphical representation of our design flyers.
5. Non-participation of members: A challenge we have discovered in the course of other projects has been the non-participation of some participants, and this is caused by many reasons ranging from a low understanding of the project being carried out and the, so we are solving this problem by consistently informing the participants of the many facets of the proposal and how they can be involved, regardless of their current skill levels and knowledge of the projects.
6. Low updated knowledge of members: It has been discovered that some or most participants have no idea about this type of project, and some have clues about it but do not know how they can contribute, so the proposal will help update the knowledge of participants and bring them up to speed on contributing to Archives on Wikimedia.
approaches to achieve
a. guidance and counselling: The proposal will provide avenues for participant opportunities to receive counsel and guidance from trainers and more experienced wikimedians that will be in volved in the proposals b. effective task distribution and monitoring: the proposal will help participants get more involved in the projects by getting them involved in every step of the projects, distributing tasks ranging from curation to research and development to editing and providing necessary support and monitoring for them as well to check and oversee performance metrics c. Regular team member engagement: Based on the engagement strategy of the proposal, meetings and events will be held to expose the community to Wiki projects and campaigns as it relates to the proposal. Engaging the community through this events and activities will enhance the sustainability strategy of the community in its entire operations and help create a strategic means to always keep members informed and aware of the various programs and campaigns unfolding on-wiki that may be unaware of d. Graphics designs aimed at creating awareness: The proposal will engage a team of volunteer graphic designers to create visually appealing designs to enhance reach and spread about Heritage Archives and the role of Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikipedia in archiving this knowledge gathered. the designs will help share relevant information about the process of digitization and curation of Heritage Archives e. Basic Training: the proposal will help train participants on the different facets of archival heritage materials, how to use the Wiki, and how to become a wikimedian. f. Mentorship: Mentorship is a key thing in achieving the set objectives that the proposal is set to carry out. Mentorship cuts across all levels, from skill mentorships to life coaches, professional mentorship, and, most importantly, Wikiverse mentorship. Wikimedia is very versatile and requires that newly onboarded participants and other pre-existing participants get mentored to ensure that the quality is maintained. some more ways that we have set out to achieve the goals of the proposal are listed below g. Sustainable engagement h. Upskilling of members i. Introduction to skill acquisition and development j. Outreaches and visits k. Targeted audience reach l. Content Creation, engaging post m. User-friendly community orientation and Friendly Space policy n. Checks, follow-up strategies o. Constant education p. Webinars and events q. Workshops and training
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
Open refine and PattyPan Trainings OpenRefine and pattypan training are part of the major activities that will take place during the proposal. The training will teach participants from scratch to the top the various ways to contribute to Wiki projects. a link to one of the pattypan trainings done can be found via the link https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Event_Flyer_for_PattyPan_Training_Workshop.jpg
Curation and digitization training This curation and digitisation training is a partnership between myself and Tecres Technologies, who are professionals in anything digitisation They will be training participants on the use of large scanning machines to save documents as JPEGs and Tiff files and equipping them for when the community will get those kinds of machines to eliminate the cost for digitisation in future projects.
Curation This activity is an important part of the process, and since most of the community members are architects, we will be teaching them the process of digitising the architectural heritage archives, which will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
Digitization This activity, which is the actual process of converting large-scale physical drawings to digital format, is a major part of the work process. Digitisation is very important and we hope to teach and expose the community and members to the nitty-gritty of the process before the training starts
Cross-border Collaboration and partnership A part of the proposal will involve having events that foster cross-border collaborations within Africa and other parts of the global community where possible and further spread the reach of the end product of the work being done.
Interministerial collaboration and partnerships A major part of the project is strengthening the relationships between ministries that aid and support the digitisation of archives and the materials to be digitised and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Collaboration and partnerships play a vital role and help with unhindered access to these archives.
Wikiproject Trainings Other training in the Wikiverse, like Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikisource, Wikivoyage, etc., will be part of the project event, and activities training on these projects will be provided and all participants will benefit accordingly.
