Wiki Loves Afrodemics 2025 is an annual initiative of the The Wiki Afrodemics project. The project aims to close the huge content gaps in Africa by increasing African scholars' visibility. This will be done by creating and improving articles, adding citations, categories and data, about the historical and contemporary African academics and scientists so that they can be available and easily accessible in different languages across Wikimedia Foundation Projects. The first edition in 2023 saw the creation and improvements of different quality articles about African academics and scientists which can be found here.

After the project, we ensured that most of the participants continued to work on improving articles related to African academics and scientists. This was done by highlighting different articles that needed to be improved and notable articles that needed to be created on the project's metapage. With this, we were able to retain over 60 per cent of the participants who have been improving and creating African scientists and academics related articles into C grade and B grade including the Aderemi Kuku, Oladipo Ogunlesi, National Public Health Laboratory (Sudan), Charles Wambebe and Sunday Iyahen, that were improved to the good articles states long after the end of the project. This is evidence of the sustainability of the project and a huge step toward the long-term goal of the initiative i.e to become a thematic organisation.

Therefore, this second edition would continue the documentation of the biographies of notable academics and scientists both on Wikipedia and Wikidata. However, due to the feedback we received from the community, we will also take into consideration the local languages by facilitating training that will not only document African scientists and academics on the English Wikipedia but also train the participants on the different translation techniques used in translating the biographies to four major Nigerian Languages which are Hausa Language, Yoruba Language, Fulfulde and Igbo Language. To make it easy, the list of English articles without translation has been documented on the project's metapage for translate-a-thon after the participants have been trained. This was done to avoid vandalism and ease access to the articles.

Approaches


Training and recruiting of editors: The project would train and recruit editors that would contribute to creating and improving articles on English Wikipedia. The project would also collaborate with the Hausa, Yoruba, Fulfulde and Igbo Wikimedia communities to facilitate trainings that would allow the editors to actively contribute to the translation of articles about academics and scientists that have been created on English Wikipedia to their respective languages. Therefore, apart from 40 editors that would be trained for English Wikipedia, 30 editors would also be trained from each of the language communities that was mentioned above.

Closing Knowledge Gaps: The training would close the knowledge gaps by making sure that notable African academics and scientists are documented on English Wikipedia and are translated into Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and Fulfulde Wikipedia.

Improving existing articles: The campaign would also increase the stub articles of African academics and scientists to C, B and Good Articles. The project team are people who have improved several articles into Good articles. Therefore, they will leverage their experience to teach the volunteers on how to navigate the existing articles.

Creating articles: The project's team are volunteers who are well-grounded in article creation. Almost all the trainers have created hundreds of articles. Therefore, they will utilize their experience in article creation to teach both the new and existing editors the different ways and methods of creating articles on Wikipedia.

Translation: We will collaborate with experienced member of Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and Fulfulde Wikimedia to give extensive training on how effective translation of articles from English to the local languages. They will also monitor the translate-a-thon and ensure that none of the participants would vandalise or wrong translate in the name of the campaign.

Feedback: Forms would be circulated after the campaign to generate suggestions and observations from the participants after the project. This would be used to improve the next edition of the project.

Planned activities

Two physical trainings for English-language Wikipedia and Wikidata editors: English-language wiki editor participants would be provided with two capacity-building trainings on what is needed to improve and create new content relating to African academics and scientists. The training would focus on the identification of Academics and Scientists, writing from a WP:NPOV, and how to improve stub articles to C, B, and Good articles.

Two online trainings for English language Wikipedia and Wikidata editors: Two online trainings would also be provided during the campaign. This would be a good idea to revise what has been learnt and attend to problems faced by the participants and other questions that might arise during the campaign.

There will be one physical training session for each of the major languages (Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa): For an effective translate-a-thon, the participants need to understand the requirements and the different ways of translation. Therefore, the physical training will introduce the participants to effective translation and the different tools that can be used to improve, not vandalize Wikipedia spaces.

Edit-a-thon and translate-a-thon: For the participants participating in the English Wikipedia, there will be a two-month edit-a-thon where they will rigorously and positively create and improve contents in the English Wikipedia space. Priority would also be given to people who can take African academics and scientists articles into Good and featured articles as they would recognized and rewarded separately.

Also, translate -a-thon would be carried out and monitored by the community organisers within two months. This would ensure that the documented English version is readily available for the local languages.

Review: The Reviewers would review the activities and contributions of the participants and gift card vouchers would be given to the top three participants from each Wikipedia category (English, Hausa, Igbo, Fulfulde and Yoruba)

Certification: All the participants who participated in the campaigns training and edit-a-thon/Translate-a-thin would be certified.

Special award and recognition for Good and Featured Articles: To be able to reduce the number of stubs and start articles related to African academics and scientists, there would be special gift card vouchers for participants who can take the articles to either good and featured articles during campaign. After, the campaign, there would be special digital awards and barnsters for members who continue the activity.

Special Gender Award: This is an award and voucher that would be given to a participant who contributed mostly to the creation and improvement of articles related to women academics and scientists.

Ibjaja055 is an experienced Wikimedia projects editor. He was the 2023 Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Editor of the Year. He is a currently a new page reviewer and auto-pateoller on the English Wikipedia. He has over 20,000 edits across Wikimedia foundation projects and has created hundreds of articles around African Academics and scientists including good articles. 2. FuzzyMagma is an experienced Wikimedia editor who has been contributing to Wikimedia and it's sisters projects for years. He has created hundreds of articles around African academics and scientists. contributed immensely to the improvement and creation of African scientists and academics articles. He has over 37,000 edits across Wikimedia foundation projects and have improved 10 articles to good articles, 56 B articles and 75 C articles as it can be seen here

Role: Wikipedia facilitator and M & E officer

Vanderwaalforces is an experienced Wikimedia projects editor. He participated in the first edition of Wiki Loves Afrodemics and his exceptional content creating skills has made us involve him in this second edition. He has over 63, 000 edits across Wikimedia foundation projects with half coming from the English Wikipedia. He has contributed to several good articles and Featured lists. Therefore, we believe that his invaluable experience will help the participants around contents and prose writing on Wikipedia. here

Role: Wikipedia Reviewer and trainer

Ojewuyib is a fellow of African Wiki Women and an experienced Wikimedia. She will be assisting wikidata trainer and at the same time be the communication officer of the project.

Reading Beans: He is a highly experienced Wikimedia projects editor. He was the project lead of Wikimedia Awareness in University of Calabar. He has contributed massively to Nigerian topics and he also participated in the first edition of the project as a participant. He is an active member of Afd and an Afc reviewer. He currently has close to 20, 000 edits on Wikipedia. Therefore, I believe that both his experience as a participant in 2023 and as an experienced Wikipedian will further help to motivate both the new and existing editors who might want to participate in the project. His contributions to Wikimedia projects can be seen here

Role: Wikipedia and Wikidata trainer

Also, we have communicated with our language community coordinator from Hausa, Fulfulde, Igbo Yoruba community. They will ensure proper training and monitoring of the translate-a-thon in the communities. These are the coordinators:

1. Ọmọladéabídèmí99 is a Yoruba Wikipedia editor who has created over 500 articles on Yoruba Wikipedia. She is the president of the Yoruba Wiki Fan-club Unilag and Wikipedian-in-Residence for the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group Nigeria. She has led successful projects, such as the "Wikipedia Training: University of Lagos First Semester," where she trained and guided participants in the art of editing and translating into Yoruba Wikipedia. She has trained and recruited over 100 editors to the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group. She is the Yoruba Afrodemics coordinator and she will be responsible for training and monitoring of Yoruba language translation-a-thon.

2. Bembety: He is an active Hausa Wikipedia editor and is currently the Afrodemics coordinator for the Hausa language.

3. Iwuala Lucy is an experienced Wikimedian and passionate about indigenous language revitalization and free knowledge dissemination. She is the Coordinator for Igbo Wiki Fan Club, Alvan, Member of the Wiki Loves Women, Regional Grant Committee, Member of the ComCom Wikimedia Foundation, and Social Media Manager for Wiki Loves Monuments International Team. She is the Afrodemics lgbo language coordinator.

The target participants are from Nigeria. 40 participants will be selected for the English Wikipedia and they will consist of active members of the Afrodemics community and new participants who are willing to contribute to English Wikipedia. 30 participants each would also be selected for Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and Fulfulde community. Google forms under the control of the community coordinator would be sent to the community groups for the recruitment process. After the training, new members who are on the Afrodemics community group would be added for further mentoring.
