Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
Festivals are one of the elements of culture that showcases the beauty of a particular group of people. In Africa, specifically Ghana festivals are held in high esteem, however, research shows that most of the content on Wikipedia about festivals in Ghana do not have enough images that portray the beautiful cultural festivals of the Ghanaian heritage to the rest of the world.
When people are reading articles, their attention is more readily attracted to a picture than simply a group of words because they inject color and character into a body of text. So as the saying goes, picture speak loader than words.
The Festivals in Ghana project will help add photo stories to the selected festivals in Ghana. We will add a photo gallery to every festival content to add more understanding of the culture.
It is important to showcase the beautiful festivals in the form of pictures in our Ghanaian cultural heritage.
We want to bridge the gap between content and photo story in this project.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
Our strategic approach is to select a period where most festivals are being celebrated a lot and leverage on that to cover them. Since there are many festivals in Ghana which cannot be covered in one year, we are hoping to document at least ten (10) festivals and upload them on Wikimedia Commons for future projects on Wikipedia.
The period will be between July and December 2023. During this time, groups tend to host festivals. It is our goal to cover at least two (2) festivals per month during this period.
Another strategy we will use is the timeliness of our uploads. Considering the nature of the project, uploads of the images will be done after every photo walk. This will aid us to properly track the project and also make it easier for us to complete the project in an orderly manner.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
The festival project will be shared on social media and other relevant platform in order to inform people about the project.
During the Photo walk series, we will introduce people to Wikipedia as part of the project at the festival ground and how we want to use the pictures taken on Wikipedia platform.
We will also design a branded T-shirt for this project to draw people attention to our project.
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Yes of course, we have a team that have undertaken a Wikimedia project before and are very passionate about the open movement project.
Francis Quasie (username: Fquasie) is a Wikimedia volunteer and a long time contributor to Wikimedia Commons on local several campaigns. He is the lead organizer of this photo walk/tour project.
Nana Darkoa Ofori-Boateng (username: Nana Darkoaaa) is a student volunteer and contributor to Wikimedia commons. She will contribute photos and uploads as well.
- 6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.
Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial
- 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
In Ghana there are a lot of festivals, however most of them are not well represented on the web. Festivals are an essential part of our culture and it's very disheartening to know that the beauty of these festivals aren't available for the rest of the world to see.
This project specifically addresses the content gap about Ghanaian festivals on Wikimedia projects.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM
- 8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?
Gender Identity
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
Our target audience is mainly the Wikimedia community in Ghana. The Wikimedia community in Ghana because after the images are uploaded, we will share links to the community for them to use to enrich Wikipedia articles on Ghanaian festivals, that are not backed with images.
Since we all have a common goal to bridge the content gap of Ghana on Wikimedia projects, this will be a perfect opportunity for them to ride on.
A communication strategy will be drafted on how exactly this will be executed. The upload links will be shared across all Wikimedia community groups in Ghana to make it easily accessible to reach and use on Wikimedia projects.
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
In order to create a safer environment for our participants, we will provide nose mask and hand sanitizer for the participants. We will also make sure that, since this is a photo walk project, we all stick together in location of the project for our images in order to be one's brother's keeper.
This will serve as a safer environment to carry out our project. We will also ensure that Wikimedia Foundation's friendly policy will be adhered to.
