The importance of local traditions and the traditional sector in preserving societal values, norms, and heritage cannot be underestimated. These elements are foundational to the cultural identity and continuity of communities. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that local traditions and notable traditional rulers are prominently represented in Wikimedia projects.
Change We Aim to Bring:
We aim to enhance the representation of Nigerian cultures and traditions, along with notable traditional leaders, on Wikimedia projects. This project seeks to address existing content gaps by providing comprehensive and accurate information about Nigeria's rich cultural heritage and its esteemed traditional leaders. By doing so, we not only preserve our heritage but also educate and inform a global audience about the diversity and significance of Nigerian traditions. This initiative presents a valuable opportunity to document and celebrate the rich tapestry of Nigerian cultural practices, ensuring they are recognized and appreciated worldwide.
Main Challenges or Problems:
1. Content Gaps on Wikimedia Projects: There is a significant lack of information about Nigerian traditional leaders and cultural practices on Wikimedia platforms.
2. Underrepresentation of Local Traditions: Many local traditions and cultural practices are not well-documented or easily accessible online, leading to a gap in knowledge and understanding.
3. Gender Gaps: The contributions and roles of women in preserving and promoting Nigerian traditions are often underrepresented.
Main Approaches to Achieve This Change:
1. Training Sessions: Conduct online and in-person training sessions to equip both new and existing editors with the skills necessary to create and improve articles on Wikimedia projects.
- Online Sessions: Focus on account creation, minor edits, and enhancing editing skills. - Physical Sessions: Provide in-depth training on Wikipedia fundamentals, emphasizing notability and reliable source referencing to prevent vandalism and ensure high-quality contributions.
2. Edit-a-thon: Organize a two-week edit-a-thon to allow participants to practice and apply their newly acquired skills. This period will include continuous support and guidance through a WhatsApp group, ensuring participants remain motivated and confident.
3. Content Creation and Improvement: Encourage participants to create new articles and improve existing ones related to Nigerian Traditional Leaders and their traditions. Emphasis will be placed on closing knowledge and gender gaps.
4. Review and Awards: After the edit-a-thon, review the participants' edits to ensure accuracy and quality. Recognize and award the best contributions to motivate ongoing participation.
5. Sustaining the Community: Establish a lasting community through the WhatsApp group, providing continuous support, collaboration opportunities, and motivation to contribute high-quality content to Wikimedia projects.
Through implementing these approaches, we aim to create a comprehensive and accurate representation of Nigerian cultural heritage on Wikimedia platforms, thereby preserving and promoting our traditions on a global scale.

The Wiki Loves Naija Tradition 2024 project will span one month and consists of five customized sessions designed to engage editors in the campaign. The planned activities are as follows: 1. Online Sessions:
- First Session: Focus on account creation and minor edits. This session will be conducted via Zoom, providing participants with basic knowledge of editing Wikipedia and its sister projects. - Second Session: Aimed at enhancing the editing skills of participants and addressing any issues encountered during their initial edits. This session will also be held online.
2. Physical Sessions:
- To prevent vandalism and destructive edits when creating and improving articles on Wikipedia, we will conduct two in-person training sessions. These sessions will cover the basics and fundamentals of Wikipedia and its sister projects, with an emphasis on notability and reliable source referencing. Our facilitators will lead these sessions to ensure a comprehensive understanding.
3. Edit-a-thon:
- A two-week edit-a-thon will follow the training sessions, allowing participants to apply their newly acquired editing skills. During this period, participants will stay connected through a WhatsApp group, receiving ongoing guidance and support. Facilitators will be available to provide real-time assistance, answer questions, and ensure participants can confidently contribute to Wikipedia. This continuous interaction will help maintain motivation and address any challenges encountered while editing.
4. Review and Awards:
- After the edit-a-thon, we will spend five days reviewing participants' edits. Winners will be identified and awarded based on the quality and impact of their contributions.
5. Closing Ceremony:
- The closing ceremony will honor the winners of the edit-a-thon and encourage all participants to continue editing and contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects. We will celebrate participants' achievements, award certificates to winners, and recognize their efforts. Additionally, we will emphasize the importance of sustaining the community created during the project. The established WhatsApp group will continue to serve as a resource for guidance, collaboration, and motivation, fostering long-term commitment to contributing high-quality content to Wikipedia and its sister projects.
