5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Other (please specify) Wiki Loves SDGS in Rwanda because SDGS is cross-cutting in all.

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The change we are aiming to bring with Wiki Loves Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Rwanda is to bridge the content gap that exists on Wikipedia regarding the SDGs, with a focus on Rwanda. To address the lack of comprehensive and localized information about how Rwanda is working toward achieving the SDGs, particularly in Kinyarwanda and English. The event will provide a platform for civic organizations and youth networks in Rwanda to contribute their expertise, experiences, and insights, elevating Wikipedia with reliable and updated content that reflects Rwanda's progress on the SDGs. Main Challenges: Content Gap on Wikipedia: There is limited information on Wikipedia related to Rwanda's efforts and achievements toward the SDGs. This restricts global visibility and understanding of Rwanda’s progress. Language Barrier: Much of the available content on the SDGs is in major international languages, while Kinyarwanda content remains light which needs translation on some content on SDG to be in local language and also create and improve existing articles on Wikipedia which are related to SDG. Approaches to Achieve the Change: Collaborative Workshops and Edit-thon: We will organize workshops, both physical and virtual, to train participants on how to edit Wikipedia and contribute SDG-related content in Kinyarwanda and English. These workshops will target youth networks, civic organizations, and individuals passionate about sustainable development. Partnerships with Local Organizations: Collaborating with organizations already working on SDGs will help ensure the accuracy and relevance of the content, as they can provide data, case studies, and insights specific to Rwanda. Engaging Kinyarwanda-speaking Communities: By encouraging contributions in Kinyarwanda, we will empower local communities to share their stories and experiences while increasing the availability of content in Rwanda’s native language. However, we will focus on addressing those gaps, as well as contribute to free knowledge access.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Our project is centered on improving the representation of the 17 SDGs and related topics on Wikipedia, with a special focus on content that highlights Rwanda’s progress. This project will involve several interconnected activities, designed to bridge the SDG knowledge gap, promote participation, and ensure the sustainability of the contributions. Recruitment of Contributors We will actively recruit a diverse pool of contributors, including: Local Wikimedians: Experienced Wikipedia editors who will lead and mentor new contributors. University Students: Engaging students from universities who are studying relevant fields such as development studies, environmental science, and public policy to contribute their knowledge.

Edit-a-thons and Workshops

We will host a series of edit-a-thons—collaborative editing sessions—where contributors will gather physically and virtually to update and improve Wikipedia articles on SDGs. These sessions will: Include Wikipedia training for new editors to help them navigate the platform and adhere to editing guidelines. Be facilitated by experts, who will provide insights into the SDGs and guide participants on the topics most in need of attention. Encourage a focus on Rwanda-specific SDG content as well as global relevance, ensuring that Rwanda’s efforts are visible to a worldwide audience. Target high-view articles and prioritize those with significant public interest for revision. Translation into Kinyarwanda A key component of the project is translating Wikipedia articles into Kinyarwanda to increase accessibility for local communities. This will: Expand the reach of SDG-related knowledge to non-English speakers. Encourage local engagement by making the content more relevant and accessible to Rwandans. Involve a collaboration between volunteers and linguists to ensure accurate and culturally sensitive translations. Biographies of SDG Leaders In addition to article revisions, we will compile and update biographies of global and local SDG leaders. This will: Highlight the contributions of individuals who are driving SDG progress, both globally and within Rwanda. Provide role models for youth and other contributors to learn from and be inspired by. Partnerships and Collaborations We will work closely with several key partners, including: NGOs and Civic Organizations: To provide expert knowledge and data on Rwanda’s progress toward achieving the SDGs. Universities: Partnering with academic institutions will help recruit students, provide a platform for Wikipedia training, and ensure the credibility of the information added. Wikimedia Rwanda User Group: To coordinate activities, ensure alignment with Wikipedia’s guidelines, and sustain long-term engagement.

These activities have been strategically chosen to maximize participation, ensure high-quality contributions, and make SDG-related knowledge more accessible to both local and global communities.

(required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Learning and metrics

edit
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

I want to assess the impact of Wikimedia's outreach in promoting knowledge about the SDGs in Rwanda and whether participants actively engage with the content created during the project implimation. I will help explore the best practices for recruitment and retention of contributors, especially those new to Wikimedian, ensuring they remain engaged beyond the project.I aim to understand how the project can leave a lasting impact by promoting  ongoing community involvement, and how university or local organizations might adopt Wikimedia's educational resources to continue promoting SDGs. Learning from challenges by participants, such as access to resources or understanding Wikimedia's editing guidelines and policies, especialy  new editors from universities , will provide insight into how to better support contributors.
