The Wikimedia movement invites all to share in the sum of knowledge and aims to break down obstacles to participation for under represented groups.
A Veteran is : a person who has had long experience in a particular field. And veterans would greatly add to Wikimedia strength as they are the true definition of talent, dedication and integrity. But how do we get the veterans to contribute? With the introduction of : Wiki Veterans
There is an untapped wealth of knowledge within the veteran community of South Africa due to their non-exposure to Wikipedia and tools on how to access/use/edit/contribute to Wikipedia and associated sister projects.
Retired nurses, teachers, professors, health scientists, lawyers, botanists etc. while enjoying their retirement, on most days have time on their hands to participate in capturing and sharing their knowledge on career topics, skills, life experiences, hobbies etc.
Job 12:12 says: "so with old age is wisdom and with length of days understanding"
Wiki Veterans will contribute to the Wikimedia movement strategy of becoming the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge by 2030
The Wiki Veterans Project is looking at three 3-day events which will introduce Wikimedia to a group of 10-15 elderly people hosted at a Library venue.
1. What is Wikipedia (history) 2. Why veterans should be participate ? 3. How veterans can contribute ?
Following the events I would like to host a online competition for all the veterans who participated and contributed. To announce a winner in completion of this pilot phase.

Currently this is my idea and I will facilitate the event/workshop planning. I will reach out to other volunteers in the community (Wikimedia ZA Chapter) to assist with facilitation in terms of Wikipedia History, navigation, tools, etc. My hope is that after the successful completion of this pilot project that the scope can be modified to include other locations and greater audiences in South Africa then I will implement a team to assist with future workshops and events to increase the Wikimedia movement / Wiki Veteran awareness to ensure sustainability.
