This campaign aims to enrich and document the diversity of the cultural festival Onam celebrated by the Malayalis all over the world. Currently the coverage of Onam related celebrations on Wikimedia projects is limited and often lacks depth. Through this campaign the cultural aspects, traditions, and other practices associated with this vibrant festival are documented in Wikimedia platforms. This initiative strives to ensure that the rich history and contemporary practices of Onam are comprehensively and accurately represented, accessible to a global audience, and preserved for future generations.

There are many cultural events in association with Onam which are underrepresented or missing and many key aspects of the festival are not updated in the Wikimedia projects. So through this campaign the gap between these informations are minimizzed by documenting and preserving those inofrmation with the help of other Wikimedians, NGOs and other individuals in Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikipedia and in other Wikimedia projects.

Last year with the support of UG we had done a pilot initiative and this year we are planning to a wider audience. This year the campaign aims to engage both new and existing contributors in Wikimedia projects through a series of events. By organising diverse activities this campaign intends to foster a vibrant community of editors and content creators. The goal is to enhance participation, encourage collaboration, and ensure the continuous growth and improvement of Wikimedia's vast repository of knowledge.

As part of this campaign, we are organizing a series of events to celebrate Onam and promote Wikimedia projects. These includes video documentation, photo competition, workshop & Edit-a-thon.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

As part of this campaign these following activities are planned:

Onam Celebration Documentation: Capture and document the rich traditions, rituals, and cultural practices associated with Onam. Experienced community members are encouraged to participate in this documentation process to record the videos, photographs, and multimedia content to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia.

Photo Competition: This event will be organized on Wikimedia Commons, where participants can submit their best photographs depicting various elements of the Onam festival. The competition will cover topics related to Onam celebrations, such as traditional attire, decorations, food, rituals, and cultural performances. The submitted media will be used to enrich Wikipedia articles, providing more comprehensive and visually appealing information about the festival.

Workshop & Edit-a-thon: A 1/2 day workshop will be conducting to train new contributors and engage existing ones. These sessions will focus on editing techniques, improving the content related to Onam, and the importance of reliable sourcing. Participants will work collaboratively to expand and improve articles related to Onam and other relevant topics.

The events will be orgaisned with the support of Wikimedians of Kerala UG and Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation
