The "Wikidata & Genocide of the Tutsis" project aims to enrich Wikidata, Wikipedia, and Wikimedia Commons with verified and structured information about the genocide of the Tutsis, particularly data related to events and memorial sites.

Participating in the widespread dissemination of public information and open data on Wikimedia platforms, based on resources available from Rwandan institutions regarding the genocide of the Tutsis.

A large amount of data has been collected by Rwandan authorities on the genocide of the Tutsis. Depending on the data that can be made publicly available, the resident will work with institutional teams responsible for data collection in Rwanda. They will gather as much data as possible and upload it to Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects.

We aim to align with global reference models in documentation work related to remembrance, such as:

This preparatory program for a larger residency project is structured around four key areas of work:

  • Identification: Mapping existing resources, meeting stakeholders, planning, and organizing the tasks to be carried out.
  • Valorization: Collecting and listing what can be imported into Wikimedia (Wikidata, Commons, Wikipedia).
  • Communication: Conducting information sessions on the progress of the work/project.
  • Transmission: Sharing content and working methods with the Rwandan team and future residents to ensure the project's continuity.

The targeted participants for this project are researchers and historians specializing in the study of the genocide of the Tutsis, as well as experienced Wikidata contributors.

We will organize webinars and introductory sessions to present the project's objectives within the WWUA (Wiki Wake Up Africa) group. Additionally, we will conduct Wikidata training workshops for various partners on the ground in Rwanda.

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

This work will allow us to document information about the genocide of the Tutsis that is not yet available on Wikidata. We will publish lists of individuals and elements related to this genocide on the platform to contribute to the development and dissemination of remembrance efforts regarding the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda.

Concretely, this involves:

Entering data on Wikimedia platforms, including geolocation of historical sites, information on individuals involved, dates, etc. Documenting places (memorial sites, churches, schools, stadiums, etc.) and major events (massacres, etc.). Recording information on remembrance efforts (discovery, conservation work, commemorations, etc.) and related events.
