The Wikimedians of Lagos User Group aims to celebrate Wikidata’s 12th birthday in Lagos. The celebration will be used to enhance the representation of Nigerian pidgin language on Wikidata by improving the accuracy and completeness of its labels. It will be an opportunity to celebrate together the achievements of the community, bringing together active editors and newcomers, and taking this opportunity to do outreach and bring more people onboard. The primary goal of our proposal is to enhance the visibility and accessibility of the Nigerian Pidgin language within Wikidata. Nigerian Pidgin is a widely spoken language in Lagos, yet it remains underrepresented in global knowledge projects, including Wikidata. This underrepresentation limits users who rely on Nigerian Pidgin as their primary means of communication from fully engaging with digital content. The lack of accurate translations and labels hampers knowledge dissemination and access to enriched content for the Nigerian pidgin-speaking populace in Lagos.
- Approaches to Achieve Change:
- Engagement and Collaboration: We aim to engage existing Wikimedians in Lagos and newcomers from different backgrounds to foster collaboration on translating and improving Wikidata labels in Nigerian pidgin.
- Capacity Building: Through workshops and hands-on sessions, we will equip participants with the necessary skills to contribute effectively to Wikidata.
- Celebration and Community Building: The event will also serve to celebrate Wikidata's 12th birthday, reinforcing the community spirit and creating connections among participants.
