Strategically located in Northern Nigeria, Nafada stands among the most prominent local governments in the region with a population projection exceeding 337,853 individuals according to the 2006 Nigeria census. Presently, It boasts various institutions, including a University of Science and Technology, a health and nursing college with writers' clubs and associations, and several other business and social establishments within its community. However, despite these notable advancements, Nafada faces a tremendous shortage of editors, let alone initiatives aimed at promoting Wikipedia within the community.

As a fortunate member of this community who has discovered the wonders of Wikipedia, I feel compelled to pioneer the first-ever high-powered campaign and training program for Wikimedia in Nafada. This initiative aims to uplift and inspire new editors, fostering the emergence of active champions for Wikipedia projects. By introducing and raising awareness about Wikipedia and its sister projects in Nafada, my goal is to establish a strong foundation for the widespread adoption and utilization of Wikimedia products among the youth in our community.

This proposed month-long activity holds immense potential in bridging the existing content gaps across various topics about the community. With the assistance of experienced editors, we can enhance the coverage of many noteworthy local and international scholars, organizations, historical and research sites, tourist attractions, traditional and cultural norms, community landscapes, and more in Nafada that lack representation on Wikipedia.

Unlike other communities that have benefited from a series of training sessions and the presence of the Wikimedia community, Nafada has never had the opportunity for such engagement. If approved, this project will establish the first-ever Wiki community meetup in Nafada, serving as a platform to stay connected with the present and future endeavors of Wikimedia within our community. Additionally, it will enable us to monitor the journey of editors, celebrating their progress as they become new Wikipedia champions from Nafada.

APPROACHES:

1. Training and Recruiting 50 new editors across different higher institutions, writers, and youth associations in Nafada. This will enable the active participation of students and youths from various institutions, clubs, and local associations within the target community.
2. Raising awareness about Wikimedia projects among participants in Nafada. While many participants may be familiar with English Wikipedia, only a few are aware of the representation of other languages on Wikimedia such as Hausa. And Hausa being the dominant language in the community followed by Fula, the Wikipedia training project will prioritize Hausa Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sister projects (namely Wikidata, Wiki Commons etc) that promote free knowledge and open access to information, emphasizing the relevance of this approach.
3. Establishing a community of Wikimedia Editors in Nafada. One of the facilitators for both online and physical sessions, Gwanki, is a Co-founder and one of the active and prominent editors of Hausa Wikipedia. I will collaborate with the Hausa User group through Gwanki to execute the project and ensure the creation and sustainability of the community. Additionally, a WhatsApp group will be created for the new editors where they will be monitored, kept posted, and encouraged in the content creation journey.
4. Providing training to participants on how to contribute to the various Wikimedia projects that are the focus of the training. This includes creating a Wikipedia account, understanding core content policies, grasping general editing principles, and learning how to create new articles, perform minor edits, and improve content about people, places, organizations, etc.
5. Utilizing the outreach dashboard, with the assistance of both offline and online editors, to track contributions and monitor the progress of the participants.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The Wikimedia Awareness in Nafada will consist of five sessions. The community is already aware of the proposed project, and with the Project Lead's membership in the community, the following approaches can be achieved:

Awareness Trips - Sensitization and awareness trips will be undertaken to tour the premises of the communities explaining the activities of Wikipedia and its sister projects. Fliers and handbills containing information about Wikipedia and its sister projects will be distributed. The community members have already expressed eagerness to welcome the project, and we will identify only fifty (50) participants for the project.

Online onboarding session - This will introduce the newly recruited Wikimedia editors to the Wikimedia projects and their activities. Account creation and minor editing issues will be addressed during the session, which will be conducted via Zoom/Google Meet. The link will be publicized.

First Physical Workshop - This will involve one-on-one interaction with the fifty recruited participants. In the session. Practical sessions will be held on how to improve Wikipedia and its sister projects.

Second Physical Workshop - Participants who have now gained an idea of how to edit will be given the chance to explain the problems they are facing, and the issues will be addressed by the team.

Second Online Session and Edit-a-thon - This will be another training session aimed at fine-tuning the editing skills of new and existing editors. After the training, there will be a three-week Edit-a-thon where winners and participants will be awarded a certificate of excellence each. Additionally, the Nafada Wikimedia Community will be created to provide a platform for sustainability to the project. .
