6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Ogbomosho is a bustling metropolis within Oyo State, Nigeria and it is a home to a thriving community of nearly one million residents. The city takes pride in its educational landscape, housing esteemed institutions like Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Best Legacy College of Education, and the School of Nursing. Adding to the city's vibrant tapestry are several writers' clubs and associations, contributing their essence to its intellectual and cultural vibrancy. Yet, amid these promising strides, a visible gap remains, revealing a shortage of editors, initiatives and lack of awareness aimed at fostering Wikimedia's growth within the heart of Ogbomosho's community. As an enthusiastic member of this community, having personally discovered the power of Wikimedia, I feel a strong responsibility to initiate the first Wikimedia awareness campaign and training program in Ogbomosho. This initiative aims to foster the growth of new editors and ignite the emergence of dedicated champions for Wikimedia projects. The project intents to train and recruit 40 editors who are resident of Ogbomosho. By establishing Wikipedia and its sister projects' awareness in Ogbomosho, we hope to lay a robust foundation for the widespread adoption and utilization of Wikimedia products, particularly among the youth. Furthermore, this proposed month-long endeavor holds the promise of addressing content gaps that currently exist in various articles across different topics. Collaborating with experienced editors, we intend to elevate the coverage of notable local and international scholars, organizations, tourist attractions, and historical sites within Ogbomosho on Wikipedia. While other communities have benefited from Wikimedia training and established community meetups, Ogbomosho lacks any such activities or opportunities. If approved, this project will establish the inaugural Wiki community meetup in Ogbomosho, designed to keep participants engaged with ongoing and future Wikimedia-related activities in the community.

Main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes:

This initiative aims to facilitate the active involvement of students and youths across various institutions, clubs, and associations within the Ogbomosho community. Our main approaches to drive these changes involve the training and recruitment of 40 new editors from different higher institutions, writers, and youth associations in Ogbomosho. To raise awareness about Wikimedia projects among Ogbomosho participants, we recognize that many are familiar with English Wikipedia but are less aware of other language options, such as Yoruba. Given that Yoruba is the dominant language in the community, our training project will prioritize Yoruba Wikimedia and other sister projects that advocate for free knowledge and open access to information. This approach is designed to cater for the specific needs of the community. Establishing a community of Wikimedia editors in Ogbomosho is integral to our strategy. Taoheedah, an active and prominent Yoruba Wikipedia editor and has contributed to a lot of Wikimedia campaigns, will serve as a facilitator for both online and offline sessions. This partnership with the Yoruba User group, through Taoheedah, will aid in project execution and the ongoing sustenance of the community. Additionally, the creation of a WhatsApp group for new editors will further facilitate collaboration. Participants will be trained in contributing effectively to various Wikimedia projects covered in the training. This includes tasks such as creating Wikipedia accounts, understanding core content policies, grasping general editing principles, creating new articles, and making minor edits. These skills will enable them to enhance content related to individuals, places, organizations, and more. To ensure progress and provide assistance, we will utilize the outreach dashboard. This tool will help us track contributions and offer one-on-one support to offline and online editors, further promoting engagement and fruitful participation.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will span for a month and its objective is to introduce Wikimedia to the Ogbomosho community through a comprehensive approach:

1. Conducting a two-day in-person workshop: Over the course of two days, participants will receive hands-on training from four facilitators. This workshop will cover essential Wikimedia skills, including account creation and basic edits. With the first Physical training being the first week of the campaign and the second one being the third week of the campaign.
2. Hosting two sets of online reinforcement training: To enhance participants' editing abilities on platforms like Wikipedia and Wikicommons, the project will offer online sessions. Skilled facilitators will guide these sessions, targeting areas where participants require improvement. With the first online training being the second week of the campaign and the second one being the fourth week of the campaign.
3. Review session: At the end of this period, a review session will take place. This session will involve assessing participants' work, addressing queries, and distributing certificates. Exceptional contributors will be recognized with certificates of excellence. A dedicated WhatsApp group will serve as a platform for interaction, encouraging participants to edit and seek guidance.
4. Establishing a Wikimedia editors community in Ogbomosho: The project will culminate in the creation of a sustainable editors community. This community will ensure the ongoing exchange of knowledge and collaboration among editors.

In essence, these activities collectively aim to introduce the Ogbomosho community to Wikipedia, equip participants with editing skills, and establish a lasting community of Wikimedia editors.
