International (more than one country across continents or regions) This contest will be a global (international) contest, that aims to add captions and descriptions with the following global languages (Arabic, English, Spanish and French) in more than 1000 images in wikimedia commons. So,anyone in the world who can write and speak these global langues (Arabic, English, Spanish, French) can join.

- 6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)
There are numerous high-quality images on Wikimedia Commons that lack proper captions or descriptions. In many cases, the existing captions or descriptions are limited to a single language, which restricts the accessibility and understanding of these images to a specific linguistic group
This contest directly aims to add multi-language captions and descriptions to more than 500 images in Wikimedia Commons and we will focus on these 4 global languages (Arabic, English, Spanish, and French).
What is the impact of this contest?
Upon the conclusion of this contest, we anticipate generating over 500 high-quality images accompanied by multilingual captions and detailed descriptions. This contribution will significantly enrich the visual and informational content available on Wikimedia Commons, enhancing the accessibility and comprehension for a global audience.
For viewers, the multilingual descriptions will improve their understanding of the images, offering them insights into the cultural and social contexts they depict. Additionally, these images will also enhance the search experience by providing more relevant and accurate search results, as users will be able to search for content in multiple languages.
For Wikipedians, the availability of detailed and descriptive metadata will assist Wikimedia Commons editors in accurately categorizing the images and ensuring they are placed in the appropriate categories. This will make the images easier to discover, increasing their utility across Wikimedia projects.
Approaches or Strategies: Our approach involves several key strategies to achieve the objectives of the project. We will organize an online contest on Wikimedia Commons, focused on selective, high-quality images.
Participants will compete for top contributor awards in four languages: Arabic, English, Spanish, and French. Moreover, this contest is open to all Wikimedia communities, ensuring inclusivity and encouraging global participation. By engaging communities across Wikipedia, we aim to foster collaboration, increase the quality and diversity of contributions, and promote cross-cultural understanding through visual content.
This approach is designed to encourage Wikipedians from different language communities to actively join and contribute, enhancing the overall reach and impact of the contest.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
This contest is designed to be an inclusive, global effort to improve the quality and accessibility of images on Wikimedia Commons by adding accurate descriptions and captions in multiple languages (Arabic, English, Spanish, and French).
We will conduct this contest on the Wikimedia Commons page, and we will add the images list with codes and required languages. Participants from around the world will compete to add accurate and clear descriptions and captions to some of the photos on Wikimedia Commons.
To encourage inclusivity and quality, especially for participants who are new to Wikimedia Commons, we are also offering online training sessions for those unfamiliar with editing on Wikimedia Commons.
The list of planned activities is provided below:
1. Contest setup on Wikimedia Commons:
- Creation of the contest page:
A dedicated page will be set up on Wikimedia Commons to host the contest. This page will contain all essential information, including contest rules, instructions, deadlines, and thorough and specific guidelines for participants.
- Image selection:
We will curate a list of over 1,000 images for the contest, representing a diverse range of subjects. Each image will have a unique code to make it easy for participants to identify and track their work.
- Language requirements:
Each image will need descriptions and captions in the target languages: Arabic, English, Spanish, and French. Participants can contribute in one or more of these languages as long as they are fluent in these languages. To avoid AI or direct machine translation contents, we will ensure the jury chooses to be a native speaker or an expert in these languages. Thus, we are going to have 4 juries in total.
2. Online training sessions:
- Introductory webinars:
To ensure inclusivity and help participants unfamiliar with Wikimedia Commons, we will offer online training sessions. These webinars will provide an introduction to the contest, explain how to add captions and descriptions, and offer tips for ensuring accuracy, clarity, and cultural sensitivity on the captions and descriptions uploaded.
After that, step-by-step tutorials on how to edit images on Wikimedia Commons will be shared on the contest page. This will be particularly helpful for new users or participants less familiar with Wikimedia's standards.
3. Monitoring and support:
- Monitoring:
Throughout the contest, we will actively monitor contributions to ensure participants are following the contest rules and standards for accuracy, clarity, and cultural sensitivity in any descriptions and captions added to the photos.
- Meta-wiki discussion page:
We will provide a dedicated page that will be available on the contest page, where participants can ask questions or seek clarification on any issues they encounter while editing.
- Leaderboard and updates:
A leaderboard will be displayed on the contest page to track top contributors and maintain participant engagement.
Regular updates will be shared to highlight progress and we hope for this to encourage continued participation.
4. Post contest activities:
- Submission review:
At the end of the contest, all submitted captions and descriptions will be reviewed for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to Wikimedia Commons standards.
- Selection of jury:
A carefully chosen jury, composed of Wikimedia experts from around the world and Wikimedia affiliates, will evaluate the contributions. This jury will include experienced Wikimedia editors and language experts of the chosen 4 languages.
- Reporting and evaluation:
* At the end of the competition, we will produce a report detailing: * The total number of images that received multilingual captions and descriptions. * A breakdown of the number of contributions by language. * The numbers will also be accumulated based on the categories.
- Awarding ceremony:
* Winners will be selected based on the quality, consistency, and number of their contributions. * Winners will be announced publicly, and prizes will be distributed. * Each winner will receive a prize of $400.
- Feedback page:
* Feedback from participants on the contest and the online training sessions. * Lessons learned for future similar projects. * This report will be shared with the Wikimedia community and stakeholders, demonstrating the impact and outcomes of the project.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Learning and metrics
edit- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
From this Wikimedia Commons-related project, we hope to enhance the quality of this Wiki platform and learn more about how to better include communities throughout the world in these kinds of collaboration efforts.
For example, we can learn about this aspect through asking questions such as:
- “What outreach strategies are most effective in attracting and retaining participants from diverse regions and linguistic backgrounds?” –We can collect data from the number of participants who join from different regions, their backgrounds, and engagement rates throughout the contest (sign-up, active participation, and completion). - “What primary incentives (prizes, community recognition, learning opportunities) are there for people to enter and participate in this contest?” –So, we can improve incentive systems (prizes, recognition, and educational opportunities) for upcoming competitions so that they better suit the goals and interests of the participants.
- “What difficulties do new contributors encounter throughout the competition, particularly those who are not familiar with Wikimedia Commons or Wikimedia platform?” –This way, we can identify the typical obstacles that new users face and then enhance onboarding procedures, including instruction and assistance, in preparation for next initiatives and improve new Wiki users retention.
- 18. What are your Wikimedia project targets in numbers (metrics)? (required)
Other Metrics | Target | Optional description |
---|---|---|
Number of participants | 20 | Our project seeks to involve a global participant base that is diverse. By submitting captions and descriptions in any of the four target languages—Arabic, English, Spanish, and French—these participants will also directly profit from the competition. We predict that the competition will attract at least 20 active participants.
Along with creating material, these participants will be able to acquaint themselves with Wikimedia Commons editing, adding descriptions and captions through the online training classes we will be offering. This number comprises both new and current participants who will gain from the project's activities through the mainly online engagement sessions. |
Number of editors | 20 | In order to guarantee that the content is accessible in the four global languages, these editors will take part in captioning and describing the more than 1,000 target photos from the given and prepared image categories.
Our goal is to have a balance of inexperienced and seasoned editors, with an emphasis on enticing new writers to sign up and take part. We also aim to facilitate the editing process for new contributors and increase their likelihood of continuing to contribute to Wikimedia projects in the future by offering training and support. |
Number of organizers | 2 | This project will be carried out with the help of a committed group of 2 organizers. We (Rotana and Asmah) will be the main individuals who will supervise the competition and offer participants the required direction and assistance. We will be in charge of everything from setting up the training sessions to keeping an eye on competitors' development and making sure the contest goes and flows as scheduled.
1. User: Wiki Asmah I have been a wikipedian since 2023 where I participated in the Facts for Democracy Edit-a-thon hosted by Wikimedia Malaysia and I won the Best Wikipedian award in that competition. I was awarded a full scholarship to attend Wikimania 2023 in Singapore which made it the first Wikimania I attended. I am most active in the Malay Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, among others, where I uploaded, created, translated articles and photos and ensured the usefulness of the images and contents that I provided. I am currently an active member of Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia and Wikimedia Eesti. My involvement among these two parties is because of my beginning journey in Wikipedia where I was part of the Malaysian community and my migration to Estonia to pursue my Master's degree. Due to my passion in the wiki world, I have decided to maintain my participation in these organizations and expand my contribution. In Wikipedia, I have been actively expanding short articles and improving the existing contents in Malay Wikipedia. In Wikimedia Commons, I am ensuring all uploads I come across have categorization and descriptions that are reliable to the contents uploaded. Ever since my involvement started, I have been active in volunteering into different projects hosted by the User Group and Chapter I am volunteering in. I organised the WikiScience Competition in Malaysia in 2023 and plan to maintain my involvement in Wiki Science Competition as an organizer in the future. I have also been involved in the ESEAP Conference 2024 where my main duty was as a Communications member. I have been appointed as the Communication Manager for the proposed CEE Conference 2025 in Tallinn, Estonia, should it be chosen. My volunteerism in Wikimedia Eesti leads me to several proposed projects where we are working with foreign university students within Estonia in Wikimedia. In Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia, I have been actively involved as a trainer for wiki projects such as WikiKata, WikiGap, and Edit-a-thons. I have been the host and organizer for a cultural event between Wikimedia Malaysia and the Embassy of Ukraine in Malaysia on the Ukraine Cultural Diplomacy day. Outside of Wikimedia, I am an avid organizer and leader for various events. One event I co-organized was the TEDxHELP University 2024. I also received my certification as a leader from the Victoria University of Wellington where I was responsible for leading 7 other university students from all over the world to create a business proposal in the Global Enterprise Experience competition. 2. User:روتانا I possess significant regional experience as an active member, editor, and event organizer in the Levant and the Arab world. I have been involved in organizing various activities, starting with the "How to Become a Wikipedian" project in 2023, which is directly aimed at recruiting new editors to the encyclopedia, Additionally, I have been organizing global campaigns within the region. I served as an ambassador for Wiki Loves Folklore 2024, where I organized the competition, and I also coordinated the Wiki Loves Earth 2024 contest. For Women's celebration, I have organized campaigns focused on women. I coordinated a competition in collaboration with the Levant Group aimed at documenting books authored by women from around the world. Furthermore, I organized the "She" podcast, which aimed to highlight the experiences and achievements of women in the Arabic Wikipedia community. For the Movement, I was an ambassador for the Movement Charter 2024 in the Arabic community. Now, I am leading the Wiki for Minorities in the Arabic community, and I am organizing contests with my colleagues about the minorities inside the Arabic community. In Wikimedia Commons, I have more than 1900 edits, and more than 380 uploads. |

- Optional description for content contributions.
- Producing excellent, multilingual content contributions for Wikimedia Commons is the main goal of this initiative.
- Our goal is to enhance over 1,000 photographs on Wikimedia Commons with accurate labels and explanations in at least one of the target languages (English, Arabic, Spanish, and French).
- This will make these photos much more accessible and useful to a worldwide viewership. The titles and descriptions of each image will be translated into other languages, expanding the content's relevancy and reach among various linguistic communities.
- When analyzing content by language, our objective is to achieve at least 1,000 total content enhancements (both in captions and descriptions) across all languages.
- We do this by requiring each image to have captions and descriptions in at least one language.
Wide-ranging effects will result from this, improving the content's inclusivity and accessibility for users from different geographical areas on Wikimedia Commons.
- The captions and descriptions written may also be a source of caption for added images in Wikipedia articles.
