The Malayalam Wikipedia was launched on December 21, 2002 and has over 85,000 articles. The Malayalam Wikipedia is supported by Wikimedians of Kerala User Group, which was established in 2018.
Main challenges we are trying to address given below. Low content contribution: Increasing the volume and quality of Malayalam content on Wikipedia is a persistent challenge. Limited awareness: Many people in Kerala are unaware of Wikimedia projects and their potential impact. Lack of resources: Insufficient resources, including human, financial, and technical, hinder the growth of the Malayalam Wikipedia community. Technical limitations: Technical challenges such as language support and software compatibility pose obstacles to content creation and editing.
Wikimedians of Kerala User Group has organised several programmes to promote Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in Malayalam. Some of the notable programmes arranged by us include workshops and hands on training sessions(https://w.wiki/AoNV), Edit-a-thons(https://w.wiki/AoNX), photography events (https://w.wiki/AoJ5), Conferences (https://w.wiki/AoHc) and regular meetups(https://w.wiki/7UbY).
We are striving to increase the availability and accessibility of knowledge in Malayalam, promoting digital literacy and bridging the knowledge gap in Kerala. Our goal is to empower the Malayalam-speaking community to contribute to and benefit from the vast repository of knowledge on Wikipedia and its sister projects. We are also trying to motivate the younger generation to engage in contributing to the Wikimedia projects.
Main approaches to achieve solve these challenge: To address these challenges, we are organising a series of events to connect with more people and bring more contributers to the wikimedia ecosystem in Kerala: Malayalam Wikipedia Editathon: A hands-on editing session where participants learn to create and improve articles on the Malayalam Wikipedia, focusing on topics relevant to Kerala.
Wikimedians of Kerala Annual Meetup: A meetup that brings together Wikimedians, experts, Professionals and enthusiasts to discuss Wikipedia and its related projects, share knowledge, and plan future activities.
Data-athon for Wikidata: A data-focused event where participants work on improving and adding data to Wikidata. Also introduce the platform to computer students in Kerala.
Wikimedia Technical Workshop: A coding event where developers and designers collaborate to build tools and features that enhance the Wikimedia ecosystem, making it more accessible and user-friendly.
Photography Campaign: A photography campaign to document biodiversity in collaboration with Kerala Biodiversity Monitoring Network(https://w.wiki/AoPK).
These events aim to:
Increase the number of editors and contributors to the Malayalam Wikipedia. Improve the quality and quantity of content on the Malayalam Wikipedia. Raise awareness about the importance of Wikipedia and its potential to promote education, research, and cultural preservation. Foster a community of Wikimedians in Kerala who can support and sustain these efforts. Connect with other like minded organisations working towards Open Knowledge, Language, Culture and Technology. By organising these events, we hope to bring about a positive change in the digital landscape of Kerala, promoting knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation.
