The Fante Wikimedians seek to initiate a transformative, long-term project from October 2024 to March 2025 to improve, address challenges, ensure that community engagement and initiatives are sustained beyond the initial project period within our community, and advance our impact within the Wikimedia movement. We aim to ensure the continuity and scalability of our efforts over the project duration.
Despite recent positive efforts and results to expand Fante Wikipedia, recruit new editors, and increase awareness and participation in Wikimedia projects, there is still a need for community engagement and sustainability beyond the initial project period within our community.
Previous successful projects have highlighted the need for long-term thinking and planning. There's room for improvement in terms of editor retention, sustaining engagement across diverse projects, and integrating community members into broader Wikimedia initiatives. Our work concerning memberships-focused activities and improving the group's community culture also requires a strategic, long-term approach.
We want to use this opportunity to scale activities and fully harness the potential of our diverse and motivated community across Takoradi, Cape Coast, and university campuses in Winneba. We aim to explore possibilities for engaging our members for longer periods.
This project aims to establish a structured, long-term framework to foster sustained editor retention, improve our membership drive and community engagement, and deepen involvement in Wikimedia movement activities.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
Our planned activities include implementing regular training workshops for new editors and community members to enhance their skills in content creation, editing, and Wikimedia policies. Additionally, we will organize thematic edit-a-thons to increase content on Fante Wikipedia and conduct translation drives to translate existing Wikipedia articles into Fante, thereby expanding the reach and accessibility of knowledge in the Fante language.
Please find the timeline here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MhcsmYba-MkkYdKz-XOOcq9n5_eu2in7460fyMZTQ5M/edit?usp=sharing
To further encourage content creation, we will host contests to motivate community members and introduce them to Wikimedia Commons and Wiki data. We will also facilitate virtual participation in Wiki Indaba and other global Wikimedia events to connect community members with broader movement discussions and initiatives.
Regarding partnerships, we are looking to strengthen existing partnerships with Wiki World Heritage, Feminism and Folklore and collaborate with academic institutions, GLAM entities, and local organizations, such as universities, museums, libraries, and archives, to integrate Fante language and culture into their educational and cultural programs. Additionally, we will partner with radio stations in the Central and Western parts of Ghana to raise awareness about Wikimedia projects and initiatives among Fante speakers.

We understand the importance of maintaining communication with our participants and plan to use various platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and social media to achieve this.
To ensure continued participation and retention after the project implementation, we have developed a series of strategies. First, we will collect usernames and contact information through feedback forms to keep track of our participants. Additionally, we will offer optional mailing lists and social media groups for those interested in staying updated on future events.
We also plan to identify the most active, knowledgeable, and motivated contributors and invite them to future events, providing them with opportunities to take on leadership roles within the community. Finally, we will add new participants to the existing WhatsApp/Telegram group to encourage continued discussions and collaborations.
