1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Tyap Wikimedians User Group (TWU)'s overall vision is to engage in free educational outreach programmes, technical support, and awareness creation aimed towards the personal development of the Tyap Wikimedia community members through free skills acquisition workshops, competitions, and photowalks. This community also includes the broader southern part of Kaduna State and the western part of Plateau State in central (Middle Belt) Nigeria. This proposal is to further the works we have already begun and are currently carrying out, over a more extended period than usual.

We intend to implement a lot of activities because they are quite feasible from our projections. We have a number of methodologies we want to try out to see what effect we would get in terms of the level of responsiveness of our audience. The specific challenge we are working to address is capturing the minds of our audience to understand what the Wikimedia movement is all about. Many are yet to fully understand what Wikimedia stands for. It would surprise you that even some of the professors from our community do not believe that the content Wikipedia avails to readers is free or knowledge contributed to the WMF projects is freely given. I.e., they suspect WMF gets to profit from its platforms, and those who volunteer to get something paid to them. Our continual engagements with this set of professionals are gradually helping to open up their understanding as to what the movement stands for. We have much to do in terms of laying a solid foundation using all available means at our disposal to reach out to our people to help them understand the importance of documenting their language, their culture, and the sounds of their environment online, and not just anywhere but in the platform being provided to us by Wikimedia Foundation. In summary, we want to create mass awareness about the movement not just within our community but around it over a period of 12 months. We shall evaluate the impact of our work using Qualitative (e.g., perform online and offline surveys and phone call surveys) and Quantitative (e.g., conduct random interviews) research methodologies by getting an expert to take us through that road and at quarterly intervals to be able to ascertain if we are making progress or not. We shall discontinue any of the programmes not yielding the desired results after the first year and focus on what gives results. That is why we are having many programmes outlined. We believe we are capable and would prove ourselves if given the chance to access this funding.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

  • We want to further the campaign of bringing to the awareness of the Tyap-speaking and neighbouring communities in Southern Kaduna and Central Nigeria, what Wikimedia Foundation stands for, and the mission of the organization by taking a leaf from the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group's "Dagbani Wikipedia Saha" TV broadcast by partnering with NTA Kaduna to broadcast lessons on how to edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sister projects in Tyap. We live in the days in which people spend more of their time watching something on TV or online than interacting in person. When you invite a person to come over to your home to do some editing together, the person might not be able to come due to distance or the transportation fare to come. What if the editing lesson is taken to that person instead? What if we inform our community members to tune in to Channel XYZ on this or that date to watch how to edit the Tyap Wiktionary or Wikipedia and participate in an edit-a-thon after learning the basics to win a prize? Who wouldn't like that? That is arming someone with the tool and expecting the person to use it. Not all would ever do anything about it, but reaching out to a more significant number of people who would in turn inform others seems to be a good idea we could experiment on. This is the basic idea of the TV campaign. This seems to be a better approach to reaching out to more people who would be willing to invest their time in contributing knowledge to the movement than the traditional invitation-of-friends-to-come-to-learn-editing-in-my-house method, or social media (Telegram, WhatsApp) we currently use. The prerecorded videos to be used for the TV would also be made available on YouTube and other social media outlets. It's all about using every available method possible to capture the affection of our prospective audience.
  • We are also, for the first time, printing handbills to take the campaign to educational institutions around our region to increase awareness about the Wikimedia Foundation and recruit teachers and students alike by training them on how to edit Wikipedia.
  • We want to go all-out in establishing a stable community, with a central meeting space where editors and aspiring editors could feel homely with people available to help them in-person with available internet and editing materials to learn from to make good articles on our Wikipedia articles and edit other Wikimedia sister projects we are currently working on in the proper manner by providing a Friendly Working Space at a central location for the majority of the editors to be able to access with ease.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

We aim at:

  • Creating lessons on editing Wikipedia and broadcasting on our partner TV station weekly, during the weekends when many would be less busy with work and/or school. This is to capture the hearts of those we invite via word-of-mouth and get our audience always excited about wanting to listen to our programmes every week, all year round.
  • We also aim at broadcasting each lesson on YouTube and other social media channels, in order to spread our outreach on all fronts possible.
  • The handbills are meant to capture important editing steps to serve as a brief handout as well as a portable offline guide for aspiring editors.
  • Our visits to educational institutions would be to recruit those already involved in the educational sector, as well as train them in editing. This way, they would be able to recruit their students and support us in spreading the message about Wikimedia Foundation and the Tyap Wikimedians User Group.
  • Our visit to the traditional heads who are the custodians of the language varieties in their regions, would open us up to freely carry out our campaigns with the full support of the traditional institutions to recruit editors and establish the movement in the minds of the young, youth and elderly altogether, through our gift materials such as handbills, T-shirts and caps as well as exercise books and pens.

TWU would coordinate as many volunteers in the community as possible to participate in events such as:

  • Wiki Love events: to add images, videos and audio about our language and region in general
  • Educational Outreaches: to recruit new volunteers from the grassroots and underrepresented communities
  • Wikidata lexicographic edit-a-thon: to add as many items about our region and country to Wikidata
  • Women in the Society editing campaign: to promote the presence of women online, in both English and Tyap languages on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikiquote.
  • Languages, peoples, and human settlements of Nigeria contest series: to represent underrepresented communities in Nigeria online, in both English and Tyap languages on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikiquote.

  • As earlier stated, we shall carry out Quantitative and Qualitative analytic research to ascertain the impact of our works quarterly to see if we are making progress in our awareness creation quest or not. For the Quantitative research, we shall survey people online and offline by sharing questionnaires and even get phone contacts of people we come across to ask them about our programmes and know what impact we make on the average member of the audience. For the Qualitative research, we shall conduct targeted interviews and interact with specific individuals about where we are getting it right and where we are having lapses to make adjustments. We shall analyze to know which of our events or programmes are more interesting and later narrow down on the one(s) that people like the best, to cut down on wastage of resources in the following year because it would do no good if people are not enjoying one's content and one continues producing it.

Tyap Wikimedians User Group currently has a strength of four staff.

1. Levi Kambai Timothy - User:Kambai Akau - (Executive Director) - salaried staff

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • He would coordinate the staff (paid and volunteering) and non-staff members of the community into gaining the best results from them in terms of volunteerism.
  • He would interface between the Governance and Administrative staff.
  • He would source for prospective partners to work with the organization on achieving a common goal e.g., the TLDB
  • He would source for collaborators to perform joint language editing sessions together, e.g., TWU collaborating with WM Romania or Ireland.
  • He would source for additional ways the organization would get external funding.
  • He would envision the pathway for the group to follow for greater progress.
  • He would communicate the progress of the organization to the community and encourage more participation.
  • Where there are shortcomings, the ED goes in to address them. We have Wikipedia and Wiktionary pages that need to be fixed or worked on, the ED does them where there is a shortage of manpower to make sure that those projects remain alive, until when a stable volunteering community gets established.

  • He would handle issues related to financing projects for the group.
  • He would organize in-person and/or online events.

8.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

  • We hope to add as much female editors in our photowalks, editing campaigns and creating articles specifically related to women.
  • Our campaigns would include scouting for volunteer editors of all age groups to contribute knowledge and bridge the gap. For example, the elderly have a larger wealth of knowledge as regards language usage, wise sayings, folklores, etc. and the younger folks have a greater knowledge of the internet to navigate the internet with ease. We hope to explore them all.
  • We also hope to create hubs to promote the documentation of other dialects of the language as well as related neighbouring languages like Jju, Rigwe, and Izere as we expand our coverage across our region.
  • We would increase the documentation of items on the Abwoi/African Traditional Religion, which had been far under-represented on the internet space, and preserve the knowledge of this religious group online.
  • We would increase the presence of Southern Kaduna and other areas in the region.

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

  • By involving the paramount heads of other dialects of Tyap including Jju, we are including those who speak dialects which may not ordinarily identify themselves as "dialects" of Tyap but as languages on their own. Hence, bringing in a wealth of speech varieties under our working scope. We are getting volunteers from those areas by taking our campaigns to them in-person, not just via TV or social media, to buy into our idea of promoting our unity in diversity.
  • We are going to language committees, which mostly consist of elderly retirees to collaborate with them in working to document speech, images and short videos; as well as working with the younger people who are savvy on the internet by staging and sponsoring social media campaigns, where they are mostly active to win them over to us to join our movement.
  • Even though our works are based on promoting Tyap language, our user group does not discriminate or tolerate discrimination against people of non-Tyap speaking background or based on religious difference. Instead, we as usual would encourage all those who are willing to contribute to our quest to do so without being afraid.
  • Low literacy rate is a big challenge which contributes to many people not wanting to join. There are people who know the language but are afraid to edit because they do not want to spell wrongly or make mistakes in editing. For this, our members are working hand-in-hand with the Tyap Language Development Board to promote the teaching and learning of Tyap language in-person. We also hope to distribute branded notebooks to such students to boost their interest in editing Wiki.
  • Our outreach would also involve people from all works of life, ranging from students to teachers, traders and civil servants, politicians and the ordinary citizens on the streets via TV and in-person outreaches.
  • We would get women involved by going to women-based organizations to introduce our mission and seek their partnership.
  • We would also go to the State Ministry of Education and the state government to seek their sponsorship and partnership in promoting our movement,

12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?

As earlier stated, our user group abhors the ill-treatment of people from non-Tyap speaking background or of another religious view. In the meantime, we have not gotten anyone from a different faith actively interested in contributing to our works, but even when we do, we would extend the same treatment given to those from the common faith, dominant in the group. Anyone who speaks ill of another based on his/her belief, gender, age, dialect, race, or whatever difference with the intent of causing such a person to feel unwanted is chided. A repeated act would be punishable by suspension from the group's official activities. We would not tolerate bullying or any other behaviour that would make anyone out to contribute to our mission feel unwanted based on his/her creed or gender or race or looks or IQ level. We, as much as possible shall remain supportive to all who dedicate their time and resources towards the advancement of our mission, the Wikimedia Foundation mission.

13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?

On behalf of my user group, I have been in touch with Sadiq Shahadu (User:Shahadusadik) of the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group via Google Meet and Telegram call meetings, as well as my Nigerian counterparts like Ayokanmi Oyeyemi (User:Kaizenify) and Olaniyan Olushola (User:Olaniyan Olushola) of Wikimedians of Nigeria User Group, both of whom have given me their valuable advice as regards our application, and have pledge their supports in case of any future collaborations.

14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

  • We hope to work with a yet-to-be-concluded-on cinematographer in covering and editing our programmes to be aired on TV.
  • We also aim at partnering with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Kaduna, which has offered us a 15% discount already, to air our programmes.
  • We currently partner with the Tyap Language Development Board (TLDB) in ensuring that the language is well written and hope to partner further by bringing as much members of the TLDB as well as other language boards, into actively participating in our editing programmes, such as Translatewiki editing.
  • We also hope to partner gender-based organizations and the state government in promoting our goal of free knowledge dissamination and documentation.

15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?

  • One of our key goals is to multiply volunteers and those volunteers bring in other volunteers. This, we had been able to achieve even before now, through in-person mentorship both offline and online via social media channels like WhatsApp and Telegram.
  • As we proceed, we hope to carry out training programmes to train and retrain editors who would themselves become trainers in the future.
  • We hope, also, to document basic editing steps and place copies of the publications in our Friendly Working space to make it easy to access, as well as donate to schools and individuals to support them with the offline guide in editing wiki. Our recorded works would also be present online via our website (to be created) and social media handles, which would serve as our online libraries for all the internet savvy learners.
  • As regards funding, we hope to pursue the state government's financial support as well as that of private agencies having similar goals with us, such as the sustenance, development and documentation of language and culture.

16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.

The major risks we anticipate are associated with external factors which we may have no control over, such as the government policies, being that the entire country of Nigeria is currently undergoing a leadership change which would become effective from May 29, 2023. Another is related to insecurity, which no one knows what might happen at any moment. However, we do not think these would pose any serious challenge to us, as we would, as much as possible remain law abiding and careful in our movements and implementation of plans for the safety of all and the progress of the Wikimedia Movement in our region.

The internal factors include: scope risk/creep, low performance, cost risk, time/project schedule risk, leadership changes and time crunch. How to mitigate them are included in the document below.

19. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

We want to gain experience on the Annual Grant application, as this would be the first for our user group.

Primarily, we would want to learn about how to work with both Wikimedia groups and non-Wikimedia groups on new projects we have not ventured into previously, such as telecasts and edit-a-thons. This would enable us to mentor upcoming groups as well as help us in gaining first-hand experience to counter challenges that may arise in the future, similar to what might have occurred in the past. In the end, we would evaluate to know the impact of our programmes on the average member of the audience. We want to spread awareness about our movement to the larger population. That is the main goal.

We want to learn about fund sourcing from other sources outside WMF, to be able to contribute to the foundation's sustenance in the little way we can.

We want to learn how to improve our skills, as well as those of the new volunteers that would join us subsequently.

We want to learn about what it means to run an organization on an annual budget, with paid and contract staff and projects to implement within a timeframe, which we might not be able to achieve with rapid grants.

We want to learn about how to track our progress in implementing our objectives using tools that we have not used previously.

We also want to learn about how to collaborate with various organizations in achieving our set objectives.
