Proposal
edit1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?
The overarching vision is capacity building and skill upgrade of wikimedians for better and efficient edits on wiki projects. We hope through the project to select, train and mentor volunteers who have shown a high level of interest in contributing to wikimedia projects and are willing to recruit others to open and free knowledge contribution. We have come to realise that from past work some volunteers have ceased their edits due to their articles getting deleted as a result of their lack of understanding of rules regarding article creation which we intend to address.
2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?
Based on recent discussions with some volunteers whose contributions have seen a drastic decline we were able to discover that most have been as a result of frustrations encountered due to their articles being deleted. We hope to start by guiding some of these volunteers through all the stages with respect to the creation of articles that meet Wikipedia-eligible standards. This is important is because it will help increase the number of active wikimedia editors in Nigeria which is below 1000 and which in turn will increase the number of Nigerian related contents online.
3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
The approach that will be employed will be the mentorship of willing volunteers to experienced Wikipedian on a ratio of 5:1. This means that 5 volunteers will be assigned to a trainer who will guide them for a period of 3 months. The mentorship will a mixture of both online and in-person where mentees will get to be trained and also ask questions and get answers to their questions.
4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
The planned activities will be weekly meetups between the mentors and the mentees which will take place both virtually and in person based on the needs of the mentees. For each week the cumulative sessions will last for 8 hours.
Mentees will be taught the basics such as copy-editing, adding relevant citations and how to create Wikipedia articles from scratch.
5. Do you want to apply for multi-year funding?
No
