If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

What are the main challenges you are trying to solve and your proposed solution?

Wikimedia Canada (WMCA) is a charitable organization dedicated to the growth, development and dissemination of free knowledge in Canada.

We engage in a range of activities, outreach initiatives, community building events, content creation projects, partnerships with cultural and knowledge institutions, and collaborations with Indigenous communities.

Under the common vision of the Wikimedia Movement, Wikimedia Canada aims to increase the awareness and appeal of its programs, some of which are specific to its territory, such as Indigenous knowledge, languages and cultures. Wikimedia Canada also places a particular emphasis on projects that involve diversity and high-impact topics.

What is the main objective of your proposal?

For 2022-2026, WMCA has identified its main strategic goals as follows:

1. Increase the number and diversity of free knowledge and of contributors to all Wikimedia projects in Canada 2. Increase the visibility and reputation of Wikimedia Canada and its activities 3. Adapt Wikimedia Canada's governance, operational structure and finances to the growth of the association

Please read WMCA's Transformation Plan 2022-2026 for more specific objectives within those three main objectives.

Describe your main strategies to achieve this objective and the main activities you will be developing as part of these strategies.

Wikimedia Canada wants to focus its actions on the needs of Canadian volunteers while ensuring the inclusion of people and knowledge that are currently underrepresented in the Wikimedia projects.

To do this, Wikimedia Canada has chosen to organize its activities into six programs:

  • P1 - Support to WikiClubs and volunteers
  • P2 - Indigenous cultures, knowledge and languages
  • P3 - Francophonie
  • P4 - Diversity of knowledge and high-impact topics
  • P5 - Collective for free knowledge
  • P6 - Research and development

Please read WMCA's Transformation Plan 2022-2026 in order to have a detailed description of each program, their specific objectives, and their targets and metrics.

We also engage volunteers and participants through social media. We will send satisfaction surveys to our main partners. We will also send a general survey to volunteers, contributors, and readers from Canada. We are developing a network of WikiClubs in different cities and regions across the country that will serve as the main local and regional hubs to engage and retain the volunteers and the participants.

Do you have plans to work with other Wikimedia communities, groups or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?

Yes

Please tell us about these connections online and offline and how you have let Wikimedia communities know about this proposal.

Wikimedia Canada is highly involved with WikiFranca, the international cooperation network of affiliates and other Wikimedia groups of French-speaking countries. In particular, Wikimedia Canada supports the emerging Wikimedia User Group of Haiti.

Wikimedia Canada also works with the Wikimedians of North American Indigenous Languages User Group for its projects with Indigenous communities, and collaborate with the international Wikimedia movement to share lessons learned and best practices on how to conduct projects with Indigenous and smaller languages, such as the Language Diversity Hub.

We also collaborate with other Wikimedia entities during international campaigns such as Art+Feminism and #1Lib1Ref.

Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

Yes

Please describe these partnerships.

Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) is providing, free of charge, an office space and several space to conduct Wikimedia activities. Other partners across the country, such as universities and libraries, are doing the same.

How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?

Wikimedia Canada has a Transformation Plan to continue the development of the organization over the next five years.

Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Wikimedia Canada has a large team. First of all, its Board of DIrectors is experienced and diverse, including a majority of women, representation from the LGTBQ+ community, and representation from Indigenous Peoples. We also have a large number of volunteers supporting our activities, as well as institutional partners such as Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) and the Acfas.

We also have a strong partnership with the Atikamekw Community of Manawan to continue the project to develop the Wikipedia in Atikamekw language, including a Board Member that is Atikamekw.

We are also planning to set up an Advisory Council to assist the Board of Directors.

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation

edit

What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

We are planning to send a general survey to volunteers, contributors, and readers from Canada in order to learn what is the most important for them, what WMCA and the Wikimedia movement can do to better support them, how can we improve, etc. We will also send satisfaction surveys to our main partners in order to learn how we can better support them to contribute to Wikimedia projects. All the results, findings and lessons learned will be shared with the international Wikimedia movement as well.

We will also continue to document all lessons learned and best practices to conduct projects with Indigenous and smaller languages.

What do you do to make sure there is a good management of funds?

Wikimedia Canada has many policies in place to control and manage the funds. The Board of Directors and its committees are constantly monitoring the use of funds to ensure that they are used according to the grant plan, the annual plan, and the strategic priorities.

How will you contribute towards creating a supportive environment for participants using the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy?

Wikimedia Canada has a long history of diversity in its governance structures. Prior to the pandemic, the majority of in-person activities were lead and organized by women. We always applied and will continue to apply the Friendly Space Policy to all our activities, and now will include the new UCOC.
