edit1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.
Goal 1: Increase quality content coverage To achieve this goal, the community organized various events such as campaigns, photo walks, and contests that focused on creating and improving quality and underrepresented content in Swahili on Wikimedia projects. Collaborations were also established with other organizations to access underrepresented knowledge resources. The community also promoted increased coverage to attract more readers to the Swahili Wikipedia.
Goal 2: Sustaining the growth of the community We implemented activities that motivated editors to stay engaged beyond specific events. New activities on different projects were organized to attract and retain participation from community members. Collaboration with interested organizations and groups was fostered to expand the community further.
Goal 3: Capacity development We conducted training programs for community members, focusing on "train the trainers" initiatives. These programs aimed to empower community members with the necessary skills to become trainers themselves. Tutorials and learning opportunities from experienced Wiki communities were also utilized to enhance capacity development.
Goal 4: Closing the Gender gap To address the gender gap, we organized women-led programs and initiatives. Efforts were made to ensure the representation of women on Wikimedia platforms and empower them to come up with project ideas that bridge the gender content gap. 2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?
We found some strategies and approaches to be really effective in achieving our goals. One of the key things that worked well for us was organizing events that focused on expanding quality and underrepresented content in Swahili on Wikimedia platforms. These events not only attracted more participants but also helped us generate meaningful contributions.
Collaborating with other organizations was also a game-changer. It allowed us to tap into underrepresented knowledge resources and bring in fresh perspectives. The partnerships not only enriched our content but also strengthened our community ties.
Another successful approach was our train the trainers program. By empowering community members with the skills to become trainers themselves, we created a ripple effect of knowledge sharing. The newly trained trainers went on to support and mentor other newcomers, which significantly contributed to community growth and sustainability.

Our project incorporated several innovative approaches that set it apart from others in the Wikimedia community. One of the key innovations was our focus on addressing the gender gap in participation and content representation. While gender equity is a critical issue in the Wikimedia movement, we went beyond simply acknowledging it and took concrete steps to actively involve and empower women. Our women-led programs and the collaborative "Write for African Women" project were unique initiatives that aimed to increase the representation of women on Wikimedia platforms.
Additionally, our emphasis on promoting free knowledge in the Swahili language was quite innovative. We recognized the need to make knowledge accessible to Swahili speakers, and our efforts in expanding quality content in Swahili on Wikimedia projects were geared towards achieving this goal. Social Media: We utilized social media platforms extensively to reach a broader audience and create awareness about the Wikimedia movement in the Nothern regions of Tanzania. Our community maintained active social media channels on platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. Regular updates, event announcements, and highlights of our activities were shared on these platforms. We encouraged community members to actively participate in discussions and share their experiences, which fostered a sense of belonging and community engagement.
National Television: One of the standout moments for us was when our project was featured on national television. This coverage allowed us to showcase our mission and activities to a much wider audience across the country. The television segment highlighted our efforts in promoting free knowledge in Swahili and addressing the gender gap on Wikimedia platforms. The exposure on national television helped us raise awareness about our work and brought in new participants who were inspired by our mission.

Our efforts have significantly contributed to attracting participants and building content, particularly for underrepresented groups. Key aspects of our initiatives include outreach and awareness campaigns, training and capacity building, women-led programs, content creation, culturally relevant content, collaborative partnerships, recognition and celebration, a user-centric approach, and creating safe spaces. We conducted targeted campaigns through community events, and partnerships with local organizations to engage women, youth, and marginalized communities in Wikimedia projects.We prioritized women-led programs, multilingual content creation, culturally relevant content, and collaborative partnerships with local organizations to tap into networks of underrepresented groups and engage with Wikimedia projects in a supportive and inclusive setting. We also celebrated the contributions of participants from underrepresented groups through recognition events and awards, ensuring their voices were heard and valued. Overall, our user-centric approach and safe spaces have played a significant role in encouraging underrepresented groups to participate and share their knowledge.

Through our various events, we were successful in expanding and diversifying quality content in Swahili on Wikimedia projects related to African topics and underrepresented knowledge. We learned that organizing events and activities that went beyond one-time participation were crucial in sustaining community growth and we witnessed increased retention rates of editors and organizers.
Collaborating with other organizations proved to be an effective strategy for gaining access to underrepresented knowledge resources. They allowed us to share knowledge and resources with partner organizations, fostering mutual learning processes.
The implementation of our sub-grants program was a key learning point. Empowering community members with funding and support to implement their creative projects not only expanded the impact of our work but also fostered a sense of ownership and leadership within the community.
Our "train the trainers" program was a major success in building capacity within the community. Trainers equipped with essential skills played a pivotal role in supporting and mentoring new volunteers. This approach significantly contributed to the emergence of new leaders and created a positive learning ecosystem within the community.

We will prioritize further efforts to engage and retain non-Wikimedians in our community. The unexpected interest and participation from individuals new to the Wikimedia movement have shown us the importance of reaching out beyond our existing network through social media outreach, workshops, and awareness campaigns The surprising response to our women-led programs has inspired us to explore more initiatives that promote gender equity and diversity. We will continue organizing events and projects that encourage womens active participation and leadership within the community. We will look for innovative ways to collaborate with organizations that share our goals, leveraging their support and resources to expand the impact of our activities. We are building on the emergence of new leaders within our community, our goal for the future is to foster a strong and sustainable leadership structure. We will empower individuals to take on key roles in driving our mission forward. By nurturing a pool of skilled and motivated leaders, we aim to create a community that can continue making a positive impact for years to come. The unexpected impact on local awareness has highlighted the importance of raising public understanding of the Wikimedia movement. Going forward, we will allocate resources to enhance our public outreach efforts, including media partnerships and community engagement events. By increasing local awareness, we hope to attract more support, volunteers, and collaborations.
11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?
One thing that truly stands out to me is the incredible sense of community and empowerment we experienced. We had inspiring moments where individuals who were once newcomers transformed into confident trainers, leading workshops and mentoring others. Witnessing the emergence of new leaders within our community was such a rewarding and heartwarming experience.But it wasn't all smooth sailing; we faced tough challenges too. One of the most significant hurdles was addressing the gender gap. However, with the surprising response to our women-led programs we can make a real difference. Our project was featured on national TV, and it was such an unexpected and exciting moment for us. It gave us a platform to share our mission and reach a much larger audience, spreading awareness about Wikimedia

We have experienced significant capacity growth over the grant period. Areas of growth include project management, community engagement, partnerships and networking, and evaluation and learning. The organization has strengthened its ability to engage and involve the community in projects, actively listening to feedback, and ensuring inclusivity in decision-making processes. We have developed strategic partnerships with other organizations, media partners, and Wikimedia affiliates, expanding its reach and diversifying resources.
However, there are still areas where we require support to further enhance our impact and sustainability. Capacity building initiatives, long-term sustainability, technical expertise, advocacy and visibility, organizational governance, and impact assessment.

The Wikimedia and free knowledge movement remains the central motivation for contributing to Wikimedia projects, there are indeed other movements and causes that play a role in inspiring our work. Some of these movements include Open Access and Open Education, Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, Cultural Heritage Preservation, Digital, Rights and Internet Freedom, and Environmental Sustainability.

We utilize various online platforms, such as Wikimedia Diff posts, and social media channels, to share our achievements and learning.
Collaborative Workshops: As part of our capacity development efforts, we have organized collaborative workshops and training sessions with the Tanzanian University Students group. These workshops have served as opportunities to share best practices, discuss challenges, and learn from each other's experiences.
Our media partnerships have allowed us to share our achievements and the impact of our projects with a broader audience, including the general public. Through media interviews and coverage, we have highlighted the importance of the Wikimedia movement and its role in promoting free knowledge.
