Project idea

edit

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

edit

The world changes all the time. The world we look at on OSM or Google Maps is a crystallized version of the world we live in now, risking to lose the info about the past. Through Open History Map and Open History Line, we will enable users to understand the time-space interactions that created the world as we see it now.

What is your solution?

edit

The solution is, on a technical level, to define a new software layer to visualize and interact with time based vector tiles on a Vector Tile Server and to add this awareness to most open source software solutions (leafletjs, mapzen, etc.). On a participation level, this project requires the achaeology and history world to go from a purely publishing academic world to a more open-access driven world, where the data exposed has to be made interoperable with the rest of the datasets provided by other teams and users. We are aware of the complexity and are studying a set of solutions to enable an easy following of researches and researchers and their impact on the territory.

Project goals

edit
  • enhance open access in history and archaeology
  • define a standard for time based tile servers
  • define a process for digitized archaeology
  • Give better context to historical and archeological articles on wikipedia
  • Enable time-driven visualizations of wikipedia datasets.

Project impact

edit

How will you know if you have met your goals?

edit
  1. we will present the project at at least 4 conferences
  2. we will have around 50 research papers mapped with their researchers and their analyses
  3. we will cover at least 1 territory with unaccessible heritage for whaterver reason mapping researches and researchers and their analyses
  4. we will cover territories in at least 5 countries distributed in all continents
  5. we will cover an overall time frame of around 1500 years in various slices

Do you have any goals around participation or content?

edit

We will present the project at Archaeology conferences and history events, as well as open data and open source conferences. Additionally we plan to host events to gather local communities around the project. The plan is to make these events in Bologna, Rome and Florence, where the community is more active. We plan to have around 150 people at these events

Project plan

Activities

edit
  • development of a scalable infrastructure
  • development of a reliable and validated digital archeological research process
  • development of a set of tools to help communities reach out into their territory in a historical way
  • development of storytelling tools around historical data.
  • development of integrations into the Wikimedia platforms

Budget

edit
  • 20000€ software platform development
  • 15000€ community management and building (archaeology)
  • 15000€ content management; archaeology experts and consultants
  • 20000€ Event planning and engagement with universities and research groups

Total: 70000€

Community engagement

edit

The final target of the project is any user willing to learn how the world changed in history. To get there we have to target the experts and researchers through specific events, both organized by the team and at topic-specific conferences. In addition we will engage the user through a regular newsletter with news on the additions to the platform.
