Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editWhat problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Wikimedia outreach in West Africa and many parts of the Global South has steadily gained ground over the years, and many internet users in those regions know about or use at least one Wikimedia project, i.e. Wikipedia, even if they are not fully aware of what Wikipedia means or stands for. The most common form of Wikimedia Foundation grants requested from these regions is the Rapid Grants, and if you look here at current and past Rapid Grants proposals, very few concern Wikidata. Among the many reasons to advocate for the promotion of Wikidata outreach in West Africa is that Wikidata has the potential to power small African-language Wikipedias (many of which are mostly inactive) and keep them up to date.
Wikimedia affiliates and volunteers on the ground will not be able to do this work alone however, and since GLAM institutions are one of the most capable groups that can truly help in this capacity, there is therefore the need to start forging alliances with them and create opportunities to demystify Wikidata so that it can be embraced in underrepresented communities too.
What is your solution to this problem?
editFor the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem.
We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Our solution is multifaceted.
First, we'd want to embark on a nationwide campaign to create or increase awareness about Wikidata for the different GLAM institutions. There are at least 30 large public and academic libraries in Ghana. We will bring delegates from these libraries together at workshops to introduce them to Wikidata, and to help them develop pathways to reuse and integrate their collections onto Wikidata. This approach is based on successful models we have already experimented with, such as this. Similarly, we will organize Wikidata training workshops for Galleries, Archives, Libraries and Museums across the country.
These workshops will serve as means to create close meaningful relationships with these institutions in an atmosphere of trust and mutual alliance, allowing us to further expand outreach for Wikidata in different areas and with other kind of institutions.
Third, this proposed projects' solution to expanding Wikidata outreach in Ghana is to continue to grow the number of Wikidata editors in the country by engaging our existing local Wikimedia community in more Wikidata hands-on related activities. One of the very successful Wikidata engagement activities in Ghana has been the Parliament of Ghana Editathons, whose ultimate goal is to improve coverage of Ghanaian legislators from 1950 to date. We have already received 2 Wikimedia Foundation Rapid Grants to work on two out of the 13 parliamentary terms. (See [1] [2] & [3])
Finally, as part of our solutions to expanding Wikidata outreach in Ghana, we will be adding several thousands of open access bibliographic records from the University of Ghana digital records to Wikidata. There is the potential to conduct similar exercises in agreement with other universities in Ghana and in the West Africa sub-region.
Project goals
editWhat are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
1. We will use now til September 15 to reach out to institutions using emails and people already on the ground to sign MOU's with the individual institutions that sends a delegate to our training workshops.
2. As the above is happening, we'll galvanize our local community to engage in Wikidata related activities; i.e. organising series of contest about editing Wikidata items about Ghanaian parliamentarians similar to this, Parliament of Ghana Edit-a-thon and adding the open access bibliographic records provided by the University of Ghana digital archive.
3. After September 15, 2020, we will organize 16 total training workshops. We will devide the country Ghana into four zones, and organize 4 workshops in each of these zones. In each zone there will be workshop training for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums.
Project impact
editHow will you know if you have met your goals?
editFor each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:
- During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
- Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)
For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents).
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Goals | Impacts (outcomes) | Result (measurement) |
---|---|---|
1 | We will create awareness about Wikidata for GLAM institutions in Ghana | 16 total workshops. Report will be written and published on Meta and on our blog |
2 | We will enter formal agreements with individual GLAM institutions that includes a plan/strategy for that institution's continuous engagement with Wikidata | With an estimated attendance of 25 different institutions attending each event, we expect the 25% will sign an MOU with us. |
3.1 | Each Ghanaian MP from 1950 will have a Wikidata item with complete Position held (P39) property statement. | These exercises will

3.2 | Add 10,000+ bibliographic records to Wikidata |
Do you have any goals around participation or content?
editAre any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.

editTell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
After September 15, 2020, Organize 16 total training workshop and sign MOU's with the individual institutions
We will organize training workshops for GLAM representative in 4 zones of Ghana. In each zone there will be four workshops targeted at 4 groups of professionals, separately; i.e. from Galleries, Libraries, Archival bodies and Museums. At each session, containing a small group of 25 participants, delegates will
- Be introduced to Wikidata, they'll also learn
- How Wikidata triple statements are organized
- and use that knowledge to create / contribute to items related to their area, be it bibliographic, a collection or a record
- Learn to write basic SPARQL queries (examples will concern their respective areas)
- Learn how to use tools built on top of Wikidata, e.g Scholia as a tool for visualizing WikiCite data for librarians.
Parliament of Ghana Online Contests
For the 6th and 7th parliament of the 4th republic of Ghana, we relied on data from the GhanaMPs.com and EveryPolitician. The main parliament of Ghana website scraps old content whenever a new parliamentary session begins, and so there is no old records of previous MPs on it. MySociety has discontinued organizing data about politicians and the folks at GhanaMPs are no longer adding MP'd data to their website earlier than the 6th parliament of the 4th republic of Ghana. We have enquired from the parliament of Ghana and they say they do not have data about MP's in a structured format that they can give us, but they are however open to having us come over and use their public records library. We will send a Wikipedian-in-Residence to search and gather the following properties about the MP's:
The research activity about the MP's will be followed by 11 onsite editathon session including contests that will allow people to contribute from remote and win prizes.
Add bibliographic records provided by the University of Ghana digital archive
This will involve organizing and preparing the university of Ghana bibliographic records to be batch uploaded using QuickStatements. This activity will also involve a workshop to demonstrate a Wikidata tool, specifically dedicated to providing training for community members about making mass edits to Wikidata.

COVID-19 Planning Section
editThere are three major activities we will be doing for this project which is: adding bibliographic records provided by the University of Ghana digital archive, creating Wikidata items for Ghanaian legislators from 1950 to date through online contest and organising 16 total awareness workshops for GLAM institutions across the breadth of Ghana. With the first two activities we can engage our existing community online while most of them are now restricted to stay at home. We already have experience in organising online contest of this sort, for instance this recent contest,Wikipedia:WikiProject Ghana/Parliament of Ghana/Members of the 6th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana/Contest. The 16 workshops which we hope to organise for GLAM institutions will be postponed until the World Health Organization declares the COVID-19 pandemic over.
Community engagement
editHow will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project? Community input and participation helps make projects successful.
We will create a mailing list and a page on meta to inform people who sign up to follow the project's progress. The page will also allow us to seek input from the community along the way. We have an active social media presence and instant messaging platforms including WhatsApp and Telegram where we will disseminate information from time to time. We believe that via these social media platforms, we will find allies who may be affiliated in some way to the GLAM institutions we intend to visit. Through these folks we may be able to better connect with those institutions.

- Strong support I endorse because it will go a very long way to educate people about wikidata and also teach them how to add edits to wikidata. Amuzujoe (talk) 23:28, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
Strong support most of the projects organised in the Global south focus mainly on getting editors and content unto Wikipedia but very few are centred on Wikidata and we want to change that with this project. Since Wikidata is the future of Wikipedia, I believe this project will play a vital role in the establishment of new partnerships, deepening alliances with GLAM institutions and create awareness while building capacity for Wikidata across Ghana.Celestinesucess (talk) 23:38, 2 March 2020 (UTC) (as one of the grant proposers, you shouldn't also be endorsing the proposal.)- Strong support I surely endorse this project
- Strong support Only few people have interest in contributing to Wikidata from Africa. That is why I strongly endorse this project. Shahadusadik (talk) 00:01, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
