Name
editThis project is currently being implemented by Global Voices through its Rising Voices initiative.
Project team leader is Eddie Avila, Rising Voices Director at Global Voices, who lives in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Since 2007, he has been working with indigenous communities in Latin America, starting with the Voces Bolivianas project that provided blogging workshops to Aymara university students and out of which the first Aymara-language blog emerged. Further work with that community included a collaboration with Wikimedia Bolivia to organize workshops for the training of editors to contribute to Wikimedia Aymara. On assuming leadership of Global Voices’ Rising Voices section in 2010, Eddie began more targeted mentoring and work with additional indigenous communities, some of which concentrated on the use of digital media to revitalize languages in countries such as Guatemala, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico.
Project Lead Researcher is Rodrigo Pérez [Zapoteco_diiste], who was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and is a speaker of the Zapotec language. Since 2007, he started to create linguistic resources for his language, as well as positioning the language online. He has worked with free software localization, which includes educational software, the Firefox browser, and Firefox operating system for mobile phones. Since 2014, he has belonged to the group Mozilla Nativo and has provided indigenous language localization support to other communities in the Mozilla Community. Currently he actively participates in the indigenous language digital activism movement in Mexico.
Assisting the project will be a review committee of experienced Wikipedians to make recommendations following review and discussion of job applications.
