Goals
editThere were three stated goals for the 1LIB1REF Campaign at Western Libraries. We have met and exceeded our expectations with this project.
- Recruit new editors
- Add or improve citation content in Wikipedia articles
- Promote Wiki Tuesday's and ongoing editor contributions through this space
As a result of this project 17 new editors joined Wikipedia and together we added 350 citations to Wikipedia articles. We were able to promote the monthly Wiki Tuesday meetup at Western University, and increase attendees. There were 15 attendees at our February meetup, which is the most attendees we have had to date. Many of them had never been to a Wiki Tuesday meetup before or edited on the platform.
Outcome
editThe original project targets were:
- Number of events: 3
- Number of participants: 20 (5 more than last year)
- Number of new editors: 5
- Number of of articles created or improved: 100
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 15
Throughout the project we held three events that attracted a total of 32 participants. Of these participants 17 had never before edited Wikipedia. In addition, 11 of participants were repeat participants from Western Libraries 1Lib1Ref campaign in 2019.

Learning
editWhat worked well:
- Having food and refreshments to entice participation
- Hosting a series of events to provide more opportunity for busy academics to participate
- Creating a good meetup page for participants to consult
What did not work so well:
- Having only one experienced Wikimedia editor to lead the event was difficult because the event attracted so many new editors
What we would do differently next time:
- Have at least two Wikimedia editors available to help new editors at the event
- Contact Wikipedia in advance to ensure that multiple accounts can be created at the venue IP address during the event
Finances
editGrant funds spent
editThis project was provided with 500 USD (662.86 CAD) in grant monies in order to provide refreshments during the 1Lib1Ref campaign at Western Libraries. These funds were spent as follows:
Event date | Refreshments provided | Cost |

Remaining funds
editOf the 662.86 CAD in grant monies provided through Wikimedia, we spent 650 CAD, which means there is 12.86 CAD remaining.
Wiki Tuesday is planning a one year anniversary party to celebrate our efforts to build a Wikimedia meetup on campus. We would like to use the remaining funds on this party, or to provide coffee at one of our monthly meetups.
Anything else
editAs part of this project Western University joined a friendly competition between academic libraries in Canada to see who could add the most citations to Wikipedia during the Winter #1Lib1Ref 2020 campaign. Western University is proud to report that we placed #4 in this competition! (See the results here)
