Grants:Project/Rapid/BamLifa/One Computer, one Wikipedia
Audience
editWho are the people you want to introduce Wikipedia to?
editTry to be as specific as possible about this group.
We want to introduce Wikipedia to CS students of one higher school in Kisangani city, DRC.
In what languages do they search for information, online or otherwise?
editFrench
In what ways does this group communicate with each other?
editThis can include services and apps in social media, mailing lists, physical spaces like conferences or lectures, or at specific institutions like at a library.
Physical, social medias, sms
What are some reasons this group would use Wikipedia? How would they benefit from it, or what would they find useful?
editThink about what they would be interested in reading and learning about; does Wikipedia provide better access to information this group cares about?
Wikipedia is a great universal free knowledge data base. This is helpfull to get a quick overview of any topic you can imagine before going to a deep research. These are some reosons they will need to use Wikipedia :
- it is well structured and organized (categories, infobox, …)
- it is free of charge and freely licensed
- contents are up-to-date
- you can use it without Internet connectivity (Wow! That's amazing!)
- it is available in more than 200 hundred languages (you have more chance to find Wikipedia in your local language :))
Project idea
editWhat language Wikipedia projects will you promote to new readers?
editFrench
How will you communicate with new readers? Will you be communicating with them online, in-person, or both?
editBoth in-person and online
Describe your idea to engage new readers. How might it be implemented? What will you tell people about Wikipedia?
editThink about the steps that might involved to make this idea happen, and what you might teach people about your experience or others' experiences using Wikipedia.
The idea is to reach out CS students and install Kiwix on their computers. For that we have identified one higher school of CS and we plan to work with 50 students. First of all many students don't really know Wikipedia even though they use it because when they try to search the web (Google or any other search engine) they probably get a result that is from Wikipedia (WP). Most of the time they just copy/paste the content. What we are going to do in this event is to briefly present Wikipedia and its sister projects and of course how it works. We will also try to show how trustable can WP be because some academics don't like to care and prevent their learners from using.
Next we will be doing a hand on exercise: installation of Kiwix with WP and Wikitionnary in French. We will give to each student a step-by-step front and back side printed HOW TO that can help them install and deploy Kiwix.
We have chosen CS students because we are very sure that from them we can get so many other readers, we will recommend them to install the same thing on their friends, relative, etc. computers. To help them sharing easily Kiwix we will offer to each of them a crossover rj45 cable that our engineers will make as Kiwix with Wikipedia is too big, around 25 Gb and most of students don't have USB Key or external HDD of this size. The crossover rj45 cable is useful when you want to connect 2 computers and share data.
At the end we will be answering to questions if there are any.
How will you know if this project is successful? What are some outcomes that you can share after the project is completed?
editIf you’re not certain about how to respond to this question when starting your idea, you do not need to answer it right now. Campaign participants and Wikimedia Foundation staff can help you consider some options.
The great and important outcome for us is to see so many people using Wikipedia any where (home, school, hospital) without wondering about Internet connectivity. For that purpose we will ask to our participants to give us a feedback one month after about what they did, how many machines they deployed Wikipedia offline on, etc.
Other outcome will be photos, interviews, etc.
Do you think you can implement this idea? What support do you need?
editDo you need people with specific skills or resources to complete this idea? Are there any financial needs for this project? Do you need advising from Wikimedia Foundation staff?
We are so confident that we can easily implement this idea because we did almost the same thing in 2015 with 20 participants. This is a tech project, so we will be in need of volunteer engineers and of course financial aid to successfully implement it. T-shirts, flyrs and booklets are also needed.

Project plan
editActivities
editOnce our proposal is accepted by the grant committee we will reach the authorities of host school and together with them leave a communication on a local radio and plan the event activities. Then after I'll choose 5 volunteer engineers among us to train them on how to deploy Kiwix. We will get every thing ready that day : printings (badges, documentation) and buy all necessary materials (usb keys). After we have a full list of all participants we will notify (sms or email) them of the exact date of the event. The D-day we (I with engineers) go to the school and start the event. As our objective is to have "ambassadors" for Kiwix, we plan to give the t-shirts to participants after they have deployed themselves Kiwix to at least 2 PCs.
Impact
editThe primary goal for us is to install Kiwix on 50 machines and from this we wish to have more PCs on which Kiwix is deployed. Those ones will be our ambassador to whom we are to suggest to each one to install at least on 2 other computers, for that we will give to each of them a crossover rj45 cable.
Resources
editI have the necessary skill to run this project and Internet connection to download the latest version of Kiwix and Wikipedia. I will train 5 volunteer engineers to help me in this project. Here is what I need to successful implement the idea : Training of engineers: 5 volunteer engineers must be trained on how to deploy Kiwix.
