Grants:Project/Rapid/Bhuvana Meenakshi/Wikimedia Hackathon @CityJS India2022
Project Goal
editBriefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".
The objective of this Hackathon event is to cover a wide range of technical areas and projects for newbies to contribute to as a volunteer in the Wikipedia ecosystem. We will also cover javascript-related tasks for beginners, contribution process steps, and other ways for volunteers to get involved in the community projects, such as through mentoring programs and events. This event is targeted at digitally non-inclusive groups and marginalised communities who will witness a tech event and take part for the first time in their region. The 48-hour Wikimedia Hackathon will cover 80- 100 student developers across India. We will have trainers and mentors from Wikimedia Foundation who will train the students and also guide them throughout the Hackathon. https://india.cityjsconf.org/hackathon
Project Plan
editActivities
editTell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?
- The Hackathon is planned for 2 days(48 hours, March 11-12) where the student developers will undergo trainings, mentorship and present their works.
- On the Day 1, there will be a training on Wikimedia's Technical areas and tasks on JavaScript will be assigned to the students.
- On the Day 2, the Hackathon will continue and the best projects will be awarded prizes.
- On Day 3, a retrospective event with few Hackathon participants, volunteers and organisers followed by a feedback session will take place.
How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?
- For this Hackathon we are inviting colleges in India through emails to the Universities and Colleges which have technical courses as part of their curriculum.
- We are reaching out to Women only colleges and even the colleges over phone calls as they are situated or have students from remote regions of India (This is because we want a diverse student developers to attend this event)
- We will spread the word with the help of Indic TechCom communities through mail lists/Village Pumps to reach to more student developers from the communities.
- Institutional and Education based Mailing lists
- Social media
- Digital Forms for registering the details of the candidates who show interest to participate.
What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
- By the end of this Hackathon, we would have helped in improving the skills of the student developers/ Wikimedians on various technical issues and development available on Wiki. We are also keen in improving the awareness of these technical possibilities of contributions and how as a community these activities can be planned for a later follow up too.
- The follow-up for the hackathon will explore more about how to give more trainings for trainers, Train the Trainer events and also local community collaborations with other Open Source movements of similar interests.
