Goals

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The goals of the project were to recruit new female editors, rejuvenate existing female editors in Benin City add and improve content related to women and initiate Wiki fan Club in Benin City of which all were met. I am excited at the outcome of the project because it pivoted the Edo Wikimedia Hub from infancy to maturity. The participants were excited to be a part of the project and as it is my first time of carrying out a project of this nature, I gained valuable experience that I would apply in subsequent projects.

Number of events - 3 Number of events - 3 The events of the project included the introduction of Wikipedia to new recruits who we hoped will be assisted by existing editors to speed up their understanding. However, 83% of our participants were new recruits so we decided to replace the classes on Wikidata with classes on Wikipedia core policies such as notability and eligibility criteria and the neutral point of view.
Number of participants - 50 Number of participants - 25 After approval of the project, I noticed that our targeted number of participants was 50 participants whereas, the number of participants budgeted for was 30, so I decided to go with the number budgeted for.

Additionally, the project was centered on attracting participants from the University of Benin but the university delayed its resumption due to the just concluded national elections. As such, we had a high number of registered participants and low turnout.

Learning

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • The module delivery was interactive and facilitated fast learning.
    • The WhatsApp group that was created for follow up engaged the participant and eased the process of attending to their challenges.
    • The presence of Olushola Olaniyan who shared his wikipedia experience inspired the participants.
    • The use of Google forms for registration before the event gave us a general idea of the motivation of the expected participants.
  • What did not work so well?
    • Planning the event around attracting participants from the University of Benin did not turn out as planned, the university delayed its resumption due to the just concluded national elections. This affected the turnout. Moreover, most of our existing members who were supposed to assist the new recruits in better understanding the modules of the training, were final year students who were busy with their final year thesis.
  • What would you do differently next time?
    • Firstly, I would focus my efforts on recruiting new editors who are in their first year of school and secondly, I would harness our partnership which is underway with Edo State Skills Development Programme (Edojobs) who currently have a database of over 200,000 young people in Edo State.

We saved some funds by purchasing the fight ticket of the experienced Wikipedian early and booked and evening return flight for him so we could save the fee for one night's accommodation. These funds were used to rent a camera and cover for logistics that was under budgeted.

We took advantage of the presence of Olushola Olaniyan the head, board of trustees Wikimedia Foundation Nigeria to pay a courtesy visit to the Senior Special Assistant to the Edo state governor on Skills Development Programme and the national museum to broker a partnership which will give us access to the database of young people in Edo State, use the Edo Innovation Hub as venue for further trainings at a discounted rate and access to materials stored in the museum for reference materials.

Our partnership request has been approved and we are looking at holding training sessions with librarians and curators in Edo State on the first week of June 2019.
