Project Goal

edit

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new female editors
  2. Increase skills for existing editors
  3. Add or improve content on women, trans, and femme-identified artists

Project Plan

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are planning a one-day edit-a-thon focused on creating and improving articles about women, trans, and femme-identified artists and designers to address the well-known gender gap in public knowledge. We are also encouraging female editorship and participating in the international movement Art+Feminism

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We have created a library guide with information and resources for the edit-a-thon: We’ve shared this guide and invitation to edit with faculty listservs and on the library’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. We also have two participating female-identified art faculty who are presenting at the event and encouraging their classes to attend for extra credit. Finally, this event is tied to the annual Women’s Conference on campus, which is hosted by the Associated Students for Women’s Issues and will be promoted as part of that larger event.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

We have two experienced editors who will facilitate a workshop and train other librarians ahead of the event so that all staff feel comfortable helping with basic-level editing.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We will host the event in the library’s classroom equipped with presentation monitors, enough laptops for every participant (up to 70), and collaborative table groupings with the ability to show a single user’s screen (for demonstration purposes). This classroom works best for the kind of workshop on editing Wikipedia we will provide, but also allows for more informal, small group teaching and learning as needed. We are under the assumption that the majority, if not all, participants will be heavy Wikipedia/media users, but have never edited; we have prepared and structured the day to make sure they are supported.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will send participants a follow up survey and invitation to contact us with issues and concerns regarding the articles they created or edited during the event. We will provide the option to join a mailing list to sign up for future Wikipedia workshops and edit-a-thons on other topics, such as Native American-focused, citation improvement-focused, and so on.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This is the very first Art+Feminism edit-a-thon in the Flagstaff area and we are excited to host it, spread awareness, and increase editorship within our community.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 1
  2. Number of participants: 40
  3. Number of new editors: 30
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 40
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): n/a

Resources

edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have two experienced Wikipedians, Amanda Meeks and Naomi Bishop who will lead the workshop and at least five additional library staff members who will help locate resources. Amanda is also the event planner and has two years of experience in editing Wikipedia and organizing this particular event based on Art and Feminism. She and Naomi both led a smaller event focused on Native American history and culture in the Fall of 2016, as well. The Cline Library is providing the venue for free. We’ve also been granted $120 for food and $125 for childcare from the Art+Feminism organizers to help off-set the costs of the event.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  1. Food and drink (through campus catering) = $700**
  2. Child care = 0
  3. Miscellaneous supplies = $100 (name tags, stickers, signage, Wiki cheatsheets, etc.)

Total requested = $800 USD
