Dagbani Wikimedians/Dagbani Wikipedia Saha
Dagbani Wikipedia Saha, to wit, Time with Dagbani Wikipedia is a tele-education pilot program that seeks to recruit volunteers and train more people who are interested in contributing to the Dagbani Wikipedia and may otherwise not be able to attend our in person workshops because of their location, time and distance. We believe that digital TV as a mass communication channel has the potential to reach more audiences in Ghana and beyond. Zaa TV, is a northern-based free-to-air digital satellite TV channel on the Multi-TV decoder, which means anyone in Ghana and beyond can access our program irrespective of their geographical location. The Dagbani Wikipedia Saha will help us spread our wings and to train more volunteers who seem out of reach because of hindrance to internet access to enable their effective participation in our virtual training sessions. This is a piloted initiative by the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group in collaboration with Zaa TV, a northern-based digital TV station.

Project Goal

edit

The main reason why we are adopting TV programs is to promote our programs, recruit volunteers and train more people who are interested in contributing to the Dagbani Wikipedia and may otherwise not be able to attend our in person workshops because of their location, time and distance.

At the end of this project, we will be able to:

  1. Produce video content to promote Wikimedia projects in northern Ghana on Wikimedia Commons, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube.
  2. Produce video content to promote Wikimedia projects on digital TV.
  3. Recruit more editors through mass media.
  4. Create/improve the quality of articles on the Dagbani Wikipedia.
  5. Create partnership opportunities in northern Ghana.

Project Plan

Activities

edit

1. What is your promotion plan?

The Dagbani Wikipedia Saha will be aired for half an hour every Saturday on Zaa TV at primetime. This will translate into two hours of broadcast per month. It is going to be a delayed broadcast with live streaming sessions on Youtube and Facebook live to enable us to connect with our audience, collect feedback and also to respond to some questions. Production shall be in-house, meaning, we will use a rented co-working space to record the program with editing and other necessary reviews done by the production crew to ensure it meets the standard of quality control at our partner TV Station.
Each week, a facilitator will train participants on different topics of Wikipedia including practical hands-on sessions. We are adopting the Student Training Modules by Wiki Education to equip our audiences with the necessary skills they will need to contribute to Wikipedia. All contents shall be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, Youtube channel, facebook and Instagram to enable us gauge the show's impact and to also collect feedback from viewers. We also hope to translate all the materials into Dagbani.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.

Communities will get to know about this proposal through Dagbani Wikimedia User Group social media handles below:

3.Do you have any experience in online promotion or video production?
Were you involved in a similar project in the past? Do you have any other experience in producing videos or multimedia files?

Salifu Wumpini - Cinematographer
Araphat Abass - Script writer/editor
Kumbundoo - Executive producer
Alhassan Mohammed Awal - Social media campaign

4. Do you or others in your team have the skills needed to manage the video production and promotional campaign?

5. What’s your post promotion plan?
What do you plan to do after your campaign ends?

Since the program will be aired on TV and also streamed live on Youtube and facebook, we expect to reach at least 90,000 people from all channels. A dedicated contact shall be displayed on the TV screen so that viewers can reach out to us for questions and feedback. Also, We have created dedicated WhatsApp and facebook groups to engage our viewers. Once they join these groups, they will automatically become members of the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group and they will be able to participate in any of our programs. We will also use the comments sections to engage them on Youtube, Instagram and facebook.
At the end of the project;

We will write a blog post on our website detailing how the whole project was done and promotional stories on independent news agencies to get more people to review and comment on the project. The reviews will help in the organization of the future project. We will create a digital footprint of the project by uploading all the recorded videos on our youtube channel, Wikimedia commons and continue to reach more people via social media platforms. We will continue the program with the same media house and other media houses who are interested in rebroadcasting the show. After this pilot, We will continue to engage individuals and organizations who may be interested in collaboration and partnerships.
6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Covid-19 risk assessment tool linked.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project is inspired by the Joy Learning Program which is currently being aired on the Joy TV Ghana channel on Multi TV. The program started during the Covid-19 lockdown when schools were closed. This project seeks to run a similar program for Wikipedia training in Dagbani.
The aim of the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group is not just to increase the visibility of the Sixteen Mole-Dagbani Languages on Wikimedia and the internet, but also to promote the language, culture and history of the Mole-Dagbani group. We believe this TV show is very important as we aim to connect with more people and to train more volunteers to get involved in contributing to Wikimedia projects in Dagbani.
Having recently initiated steps to have the Gurene language incorporated into Wikimedia by translating all the most commonly used messages on mediawiki, we believe there is the need to train more volunteers for the projects and the Dagbani Wikipedia Saha will come in handy for that purpose. The show is also going to help in cutting down cost and the risks related to traveling outside Tamale to engage and to train volunteers. It will also help us to reduce the number of in-person gatherings and also the spread of Covid-19. After this pilot program, we hope to learn more about how we can improve and continue subsequent editions of the program. We believe this program will help reach a mass audience as our community continues to grow with people reaching out from far away lands, expressing interest to join. Dagbani Wikipedia Saha will help us keep in touch with our ever-growing community base.
