Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we successfully met our project goals. Throughout the edit-a-thon and training sessions, we were able to add and improve content related to notable Black individuals, significantly enhancing the representation of Black history on Wikipedia. We also saw a positive response from existing editors, many of whom dedicated additional time to focus on articles about artists of color.
We also successfully recruited new editors, who are now actively contributing to Wikipedia. The training sessions was well-received, and participants felt more confident in their editing skills. Overall, we are very happy with how the project went. The collaboration with TechPoint Africa was fruitful, and we believe this initiative will have a lasting impact on the visibility of Black history in online resources.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. The collaboration with TechPoint Africa was highly effective. Their network and expertise helped attract a new set of participants who were passionate about learning how Wikipedia works.
  2. The project further gave rise to a new community of editors in Ibadan.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. Time Constraints: Some participants felt that the time allocated for editing articles was insufficient. Although training was beneficial, many wished for more time to dive deeper into specific topics and make substantial contributions.
  2. Technical Challenges: A few participants encountered technical issues with navigating the interface due to bad internet, which hindered their ability to edit smoothly.
  3. Follow-Up Support: While the event was successful in engaging new editors, there was limited follow-up support to help them continue editing after the event. This contributed to a drop in ongoing participation from some attendees.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. Longer Editing Sessions: Next time, I would allocate more time specifically for editing articles, possibly extending the event over two days or incorporating dedicated editing sessions over several weeks.
  2. Technical Preparation: I would ensure that all participants have access to a comprehensive guide about the technical aspects of Wikipedia editing before the event. And also have more options of internet.

3. Establish a Mentorship Framework: Implementing a mentorship system where more experienced editors can support newcomers post-event would encourage a better sustained engagement. And creating a follow-up schedule for check-ins.
