Wikimedia Kenya Community Editathon

Introduction

edit

The Wikimedia Kenya Community Editathons happened on 30, January 2019 and 29,March 2019 in Nairobi,Kenya at the Riara University located off Mbagathi Road. A guest speaker from Creative Commons namely: Liz Oyange , came to educate the session on copyright matters. The motivation to hold these editathons is to increase the number of editors on Wikimedia, teach on how to add content, promote digital literacy and eventually form the Wikimedia Kenya User Group.

Since Kenya does not have an official user group, I put together a small team to assist me with the training.

Our goals were not entirely met but a lot was achieved.

We interacted with all the participants since the group was not too big. We handed out stickers, pens and some snacks.

We used this time as an opportunity to understand individual goals of the participants in relation to the editathon.

Number of articles created or improved (if applicable) Each participant will make at least one contribution. Every member made a contribution.

However, some articles were not approved.

The hands-on approach proved to be very effective since the number of participants was easy to manage and each participant had access to a laptop or computer.
Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable) Not stated. There were several pictures taken during both editathons. 10 of them were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. More pictures should be uploaded during the next upcoming editathons or general Wikimedia events.
Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects Some of the photos uploaded on Commons will be used to improve the current article. This will be taken care of by Faith Mwanyolo.

Lessons learnt

Partnerships and conferences Logistics Volunteering Structuring Our Events
  • Currerntly looking forward to solidifying partnerships with Creative Commons and Jamlab Kenya. Both of which are relavant to the vision of Wikimedia.

  • The group is also looking for more partnerships that will strengthen the initiative. This is,however, still in the beginning stages.
Since the team does not have a centralized device to store contacts, emails, minutes and general progress it is seen as a need to acquire a laptop or tab. Slides and demonstrations for future events can also be prepared and stored here thus making transitions more organized during the events.
  • There is a need to increase the number of volunteers as the number of participants increases as well. These volunteers will be needed to take more photographs, handle certain aspects of training for example inserting pictures and citations and those in charge social media .
  • Through increasing the number of volunteers,we are also increasing the number of people who are gradually becoming aware of Wikimedia, all its projects and the concept of collaborative contribution.
The 38 people who were registered or participated in the first event were the same ones who attended the second follow-up event as this is what had been promised. We got two additional participants during the second editathon, bringing the total to 40.

  • All editathons are to last for 5 hours with a 1hour break in-between for lunch or general refreshments, depending on resources allocated prior to the event.
  • Once proper partnerships are established, presentations will be organized and these will take a maximum of 2 hours (divided amongst the presenters).
  • Once the user group has been formed, these logistic are bound to change.
