Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The project goals were met and the project was full of excitement and new experiences since this was our first ever hybrid project.

  1. New editors were recruited.
  2. Existing editors got new skills in editing via the training sessions.
  3. Dagbani Wikipedia was improved by creating and improving many Dagbani articles.
  4. Wikidata items were created and others were improved.
  5. An appreciable number of photos were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

Learning

Members of Dallung Wikimedians Community during Kumbungu District Communities Project

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
The way the activities were sequenced contributed massively to the success of the project and made it easier than expected. We embarked on the photo walk first, got the photos and then had a training on Wikimedia Commons followed by an editathon where all the photos were uploaded to wiki commons. It was followed by a training on Wikidata, where we created/improved Wikidata items of the various communities. We had images ready to fill the wikidata statement-image for each community. The last to do was a training on Dagbani Wikipedia, where articles were created for the various communities and the articles were linked to their corresponding wikidata items.
  • What did not work so well?
Due to the hybrid nature of the project, where we had to deal with Wikidata, Wikimedia commons and Dagbani Wikipedia we faced a problem of repeated items with wrongly spelt titles. This was resolved by merging such items.
Time was allocated to train the new recruits specially and that worked well.
  • What would you do differently next time?
I have learnt that projects of this kind require much time hence I will use a lengthier period than what is used for this project in my next similar projects.
