Activities

edit

1. What movement strategy initiative will your implementation work focus on? Please select one of the initiatives described here.

Invest in Skills and Leadership Development

2. What community or communities will be involved in this movement strategy implementation work?

pt.wiki

3. Do you have any specific implementation ideas to support this initiative? Are you aware of any specific ideas in your community? If so, please briefly describe 1-2 of these ideas here.

Yes. This project aims to implement an initiative of the 2030 movement strategy, namely: "Invest in Skills and Leadership Development". To this end, we propose to create a book to help in the Wikipedia-University relationship.
There are currently several videos and short materials created by the community and Wikimedia Foundation to improve the University-Wikipedia relationship, but they do not cover: a) the complexity of the virtual environment, and b) the specificity of each knowledge area. In addition, these materials have not been updated since the ending of the project Wikipedia at University (Wikipédia na Universidade), in 2014. Currently, professors who want to edit in their classes, need to go through several articles to get a general idea of how to perform this activity. More recently, the user group Wiki Movimento Brasil has made available some more materials in order to highlight ongoing projects developed by editors of Wikipedia, Wikiversity and other Wikimedia projects. However, none of these materials target the problem that this particular proposal aims to tackle.
University professors, at least in the our experience in Brazil, tend to see Wikipedia environment as hostile. This view is largerly related to the lack of knowledge of various topics surrounding article editing. Among other inputs, this book will contribute to breaking down the barriers that discourage university professors to edit on Wikipedia as part of their academic activities.
This book will be distributed as an ebook under a Creative Commons license, which will guarantee its remains in the commons in perpetuity. We plan to publish it either by Editora da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV Publisher) or Editora da Universidade de São Paulo (Edusp).

4. Please describe your specific activities below to develop a draft implementation plan. What will you do to support your goals to implement this initiative from movement strategy? If possible, please provide a general timeline for these activities. When will they begin and how long will your activities take?

This project is the first volume of a series of books called "Wikipedia at University". We propose to start with the academic discipline of history because we have more accumulated experience in this field with regard to the University-Wikipedia relationship. This book is proposed in four chapters, in this order:
1. Introduction to Cybernetic Environment. Wikimedia and Wikipedia. History of Wikipedia, including criticism of the platform and explanation of its internal dynamics;
2. Advantages of using Wikipedia as a didactic tool for teaching history in higher education;
3. Learning history with Wikipedia;
4. Writing about history on Wikipedia, including collaborative writing and specificities of the platform.
We also plan a conclusion that addresses Wikipedia as part of digital historical culture. Some of these discussions have been initiated in articles published by Flávia Varella (as coauthor) in Portuguese: "Negotiating Authorities, Building Knowledge: Digital and Collaborative Historiography in the Project Theory of History on Wikipedia" and "Can everyone be a communicator? Wikipedia and digital curation in Theory of History" to be released soon in the Revista Estudos Ibero-Americanos. Therefore, we are convinced that we will be able to finish this project in about six months.

5. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal?

We will publish information about the Project on the Village Pump, on the discussion page for users interested in the Education theme, and we will also send e-mails to our list of participants. In addition, we will publicize the Project on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/Grupo-de-Estudos-em-Teoria-da-Hist%C3%B3ria-e-Hist%C3%B3ria-da-Historiografia-152181481987780/posts/.

Outcomes

edit

After your activities are complete, we would like to understand the draft implementation plan for your community. You will be required to prepare a document detailing this plan around a movement strategy initiative. This report can be prepared through Meta-wiki using the Share your results button on this page. The report can be prepared in your language, and is not required to be written in English.

In this report, you will be asked to:

  • Provide a link to the draft implementation plan document or Wikimedia page
  • Describe what activities supported the development of the plan
  • Describe how and where you have communicated your plan to relevant communities.
  • Report on how your funding was spent

Your draft implementation plan document should address the following questions clearly:

  • What movement strategy initiative or goal are you addressing?
  • What activities will you be doing to address that initiative?
  • What do you expect will happen as a result of your activities? How do those outcomes address the movement strategy initiative?
  • How will you measure or evaluate your activities? What tools or methods will you use to evaluate your activities?

To create a draft implementation plan, we recommend the use of a logic model, which will help you and your team think about goals, activities, outcomes, and other factors in an organized way. Please refer the following resources to develop a logic model:

Please confirm below that you will be able to prepare a draft implementation plan document by the end of your grant:

Optionally, you are welcome to include other information you'd like to share around participation and representation in your activities. Please include any additional outcomes you would like to report on below:
