- Engaged existing editors
Outcome
editPlease report on your original project targets.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
15 participants per photowalk | ➤ 24 unique people registered their participation on Google Forms ➤ 10 unique people either attended the photowalk or the upload session ➤ 28 people participated remotely |
Although 16 participants registered interest to participated in the photowalk, only 10 showed up. And 15 participants showed up for the upload session. |
400 images | 454 images and videos | We exceeded our target of 400 with over 41 more images during this competition. |
Use 20% of total images on Wikimedia projects | 40 images | For lack of enough and reliable references we were unable to create as many articles on English Wikipedia with the images and vidoes uploaded as wanted to. |
Recruit and train new editors (photowalks, upload sessions and edit-a-thons) | 11 recruits | About 5 of these were recruited during the upload session and the remaining participated remotely |
Two Photowalks | Three Photowalks | Considering the theme of the contest "Folklore", in order to get the content we desired we took a different approach of sending about four or three participants to festivals and events where folk music, dances and costumes were going to be displayed. This approach helped us to collect diverse pictures and videos which portrayed both the culture of the Northern and southern part of Ghana. |
Engage existing editors to contribute to commons and its activities | 28 uploaders | about 15 of these were existing editors from our previous projects |
Improve at least 10 articles on English Wikipedia | 26 | We mostly added images and videos uploaded for the contest to articles which needed them and added new sections to some articles |
Create 10 new articles on English Wikipedia | 47 | Out of the 45, we added pictures and videos uploaded for the contest to 6. |
no target | 8 new Wikidata items | Using the pictures and videos uploaded for the contest, we created 7 new Wikidata items |
no target | 17 Wikidata items improved | We added images and videos uploaded for the contest to Wikidata items which needed them. We also added additional statements to some |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
- Some professional photographers participated in the contest
- We realised after our first photowalk that our initial approach of picking towns to visit wasn't going to help us get the diverse content in relation to the theme. So we took a different approach of sending about four or three participants to festivals and events where folk music, dances and costumes were going to be displayed. This approach helped us to collect diverse pictures and videos which portrayed both the culture of the Northern and southern part of Ghana.
- We designed a video and flyers which we used to promote the event on our various social media platforms and that helped us to attract external participants who mostly participated remotely.
- What did not work so well?
- We were not satisfied with the overall participation, we were expecting about 100 participants, remote participants inclusive.
- We did not begin planning for this project early enough and hence could not get the time to promote it well.
- It was quite difficult tracking the users who did not fill the registration form with their contact details but participated remotely. Some of these remote participant's user pages haven't been created so it was difficult reaching out to them.
- What would you do differently next time?
- In the future, we will begin planning at an early stage
- We will also do some paid advertising to help boost promotion of the project on the various social media platforms
- Ensure to get contact details of all participants so that we are able to reach them to give them their award should their pictures be selected as winning photos

- To select the winning photos, two major rounds were involved. In round one, the jury members which involved four people(Franklin Oduro, Sadik Shahadu, Emmanuel Yeboah and Zita Ursula Zage) had to go through all pictures uploaded, taking note of the users and the number of pictures each of them uploaded. In this round, all pictures and videos which are not ponographic and relates to the theme of the contest were selected to the next round. In the second round, we used another set of four judges which included photography experts(Queen Shatta, Nate Angell, Marti Blume and Liridon Selmani) the winning photos were selected based on:
- the nice control of sharpness between motif and background,
- decently composed nature
- the picture showing a clear subject without distracting elements
- relation to the theme of the contest
- sharpness and exposure
- the difficulty in taking good pictures of a particular category of items, for instance food.
