Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

We did meet our goals inasmuch as we engaged new and beginner users with Wikipedia. We had hope for a bigger turnout, but are still very happy with how the project went.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Recruit new editors, particularly of groups that are underrepresented in Wikipedia's editor makeup (women, people of color, queer identified) 3 new users that self identify as women. We did not have a big turnout to the event, but of the 7 people who turned up, besides the two organizers, three were completely new to Wikipedia.
Increase skills for existing editors Increased skills for existing editors The Edit-a-Thon was a great platform to engage existing editors that only had small Wikipedia experience. They learned more about the foundations and functionalities of the online encyclopedia.
Add or improve content on queer and women artists of color 3 new articles created and published, 2 new articles still in draft form, 12 articles improved Focus for new users was to improve existing articles to get a feel for how Wikipedia works

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • Location: Having the event at the Jacob Lawrence gallery was great. It was centrally located since it is on campus (and, thus, near multiple bus lines, bike paths and other forms of transit). It also allowed participants to engage directly with art while writing about queer and women artists.
    • Partnerships: We got help from the Art Librarian to come up with reference books that could be used at the day of the event. We also reached out to the Wiki Education Foundation to get educational pamphlets on editing Wikipedia. The expertise of the Cascadia Wikimedians was invaluable to the success of the event.
    • Swag: We made buttons and stickers with the logos for Wikipedia, Art+Feminism and the Jacob Lawrence Gallery that were a huge success.
    • Community engagement: Because of the grant, we were fortunate enough to be able to support local, women, queer and POC owned businesses and people to provide services for the event, like food, coffee and childcare.
  • What did not work so well?
    • Publicity: We had an unexpectedly small turn out, which begs the question on how well we publicized the event.
    • Scope: We believed that narrowing the scope of the event to "queer and women artists of color" would make things easier, but that still seemed like a broad theme: compiling lists of artists that needed articles was a bit daunting for the organizers, and choosing one artist from a seemingly endless list was hard for participants. Next time we could try to narrow it down even more (queer and women artists of color of the Pacific Northwest, for instance)
  • What would you do differently next time?
    • Publicity: Next time we could actively seek out teachers to encourage their students to attend the event.
