Project Plan
editActivities
edit- What is the purpose of the meeting and why is it important to your community?
This is not exactly a meeting but a workshop, it is the first workshop of Understanding Wikipedia project that will be held in Chandigarh Group of Colleges. The project aims to bring new contributors to the Wikimedia movement. Indic community is not as big as it is suppose to be. By this three days workshop in the college, we will groom the students about how Wikipedia works, and how they can help.
- If applicable, what benefits have you seen from doing this kind of meeting in the past?
This is the first time attempt to do a workshop instead of a education program in an university. After considering all the approaches, we devised this method. From our prior experiences, an education program was yielding less interest among students than a workshop program.
- How will you let participants know about the meeting?
A learning Wikipedia workshop for students in colleges is a self-explanatory priority. Here you will find the project for which I am asking for the grant. Since participants are students of the college where the workshop will be held, banners and posters will let the participants know about the workshop.
- How will you keep participants engaged after the meeting is over?
After the workshop is over we will keep track of the contributions of the participants. Asking them over emails about their learnings, what they did on Wikipedia after the workshop.
- Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
"Understanding Wikipedia" is a devised form of an education program. We are conducting a three days workshop of how Wikipedia works and how the students (readers) can become editors (contributors). The project was started following WikiConference India 2016. And the project — Understanding Wikipedia aims to provide workshops in every University in India. The first workshop of "Understanding Wikipedia" will be held in Chandigarh Group of Colleges (Project page) and we are requesting a grant here to conduct it.

- Oppose-- Though the project sounds interesting, but I feel it will be a waste of money, why local community member can't handle the project?
Punjabi community and their user group Punjabi Wikimedians has done a lot of work in Punjab area. I would be happier if you'll coordinate with local community rather than spending money on your travel. I totally oppose this grant request and if there will be no outcome of the project and How will you measure success? If after 1-2 months students stops contributing to project.
- Neutral-- Rudra can you please list out the instructors?--Sailesh Patnaik (Talk|Contribs) 21:09, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Saileshpat: and that ip: Hello, this project was planned based on the approach of CGC's adminster Mr. Amit Verma. I wasn't aware that punjabi community conducts education program as I never heard that before. An education program is a strategic approach to help newbies understand how Wikipedia works. By default, being an editor is not an automatic indication of being an instructor for an education program, I was not sure until Satdeep Gill told me that punjabi community is equally capable of performing an education program as they are well trained for this task. This proposal was an attempt in good faith. I encourage punjabi community to do this if they can. However, in my last interaction with Satdeep, he told me that Punjabi community has no problem for me to conduct an education program. But now that Oriya community is negative towards this good faith attempt, I agree with few of the points by the IP, I have revoked my involvement and have cancelled the program altogether. I hope this solves the issues. Thanks! Jim Carter (talk) 04:19, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
- Dear Jim Carter, Thank you for replying back, I am happy to see that Punjabi community will take ahead this project, and I will be more happy If you'll edit your reply quite a bit. I don't think for an individual opinion you should bring the whole community as you have mentioned about Odia community here.--Sailesh Patnaik (Talk|Contribs) 13:27, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Saileshpat: I have done a little check on the above ip, and found that it is connected to an account on Odia Wikipedia, it's sockpuppetry but I've assumed good faith. Two Odia Wikipedian sums up the term "community". ;) Jim Carter (talk) 02:53, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
