Single Editathon

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions. Asheville Buncombe Community College will be publically advertising this event through their newsletter and social media. I will be contacting local Jewish Community centers and Synagogues about this event. Most importantly, this is a direct call to action that we will be offering following Dr. Walter Ziffer author of Confronting the Silence: A Holocaust Survivor’s Search for God. His lectures in the past have about 300-400 people who attend. ABTech will also offer this as professional develpment to faulty who might wish to attend.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

I will host the Edit-a-Thon at Asheville Buncombe Community College. As I have been a former Regional Ambassador of the Wiki Education Project, co-founder of the Triangle Wikipedia group and teach at Political Science at AB-Tech and from time to time the University of North Carolina Asheville.

I have hosted and assisted a few edit-a-thons as part of the Triangle Wikipedia User Group. Most recently, I have help host the Afrocrowd user’s groups event on expanding African American history in Western North Carolina (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Afrocrowd/Asheville)

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

I have already integrated this event into my course design so that my students will be required to attend this event and contribute something to this project. I expect from my classes alone, there will be between 40-50 participants. I have reserved one of our high end computer labs from 10-12 for the day of the event. AB-Tech will also offer this as Professional Development credit to encourage faculty to attend.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Encourage them join the North Carolina Triangle Wikipedians and join the community of editors on Wikipedia.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We are very excited to host this as the direct action follow up to Dr. Walter Ziffer’s lecture of how he survived 7 concentration camps during Nazi occupied Germany. I was requested by any members of the public at previous speaking engagements I have organized for him that people wanted to do something. This edit-a-thon will act as a call to action event, and he will join us the following day. Although he is a published author and as a page in Czech, I will be spearheading a long with a few of my students to expand his page into the English Wikipedia and I will be overseeing it to make sure it follows all standards and guidelines, as well as all other participants’ edits at this event. As I can personally guarantee a large turnout from my classes, I will need assistance from at least 1-2 members of my User Group, the North Carolina Triangle Wikipedians. Sorry I could not submit this earlier, I only got the OK from ABtech after last month's application process.

Asheville Buncombe Community College is hosting the event at our high end computer labs. They are providing the space free of charge as well as all the computers needed for the participants. I personally will be in charge of the event and preparing my students in the previous weeks to prepare for this event and to add content to Wikipedia. I have extensive knowledge in doing this over my years of assisting with the Education project and with fellow Professors editing on Wikipedia.

• I have participated in several of the Edit-a-Thons. They were fun and helpful in getting me oriented and engaged with editing. I have consistently been impressed by the skill, patience, and pleasantness of everyone involved. These are well run with experienced members. • Through my network of librarians, I know that there's a lot of interest statewide in these events, but most activity has happened in the Triangle. I'd love to see this happen in the western part of the state. Sodapopinski7 (talk) 22:56, 19 October (UTC)
